LESSON 18:

WORKING WITH
TEXT
Type Tool Gallery

Type is used as a graphic element in

illustrator CS6. It can be painted,
scaled, rotated, etc. just like other
objects.
Type Tool Gallery

Illustrator provides the following type tools:

 Type Tool
 Area Type Tool
 Type on a Path Tool
 Vertical Type Tool
 Vertical Area Type Tool
 Vertical Type on a Path Tool
Typing Text

Often in a graphic design project,

creating a text on a path is needed. It can
be typed to either wrap around a circle, a
box or follow a specific line. With the Type
on a Path tool in Illustrator, making all kinds
of creative text for the design projects is
possible.
Typing Text

Do the following steps:

1. Create a new project.
Create an illustrator project any size
with the correct resolution; 72 dpi for
website design and at least 300 dpi for
projects intended for printing.
Typing Text

2. Create a shape.
Create a new shape, either with the
Shape tools on the Tools palette or
with the Pen tool to create the path to
type on. Placed the type on the path.
Typing Text

3. Type on a Path tool.

Once the shape is already created,
select the Type on a Path tool from
the Tools palette. Click and hold the
Text tool to show several typing
options. Choose Type on a Path.
Typing Text

4. With Type on a Path tool selected,

click on the outline of the shape and
start typing. If the type goes beyond
the limit of the shape, adjust the font
or font size. Use the indicator bars to
adjust the positioning of the type.
Point Type

When using the Pen tool, there is a sharp

corner when there is a smooth curve, or
vice-versa. Luckily, Illustrator has a convert
anchor point tool that makes the paths
behave.
Point Type

Follow this:
1. Choose a black stroke and “No fill" from
the color cubes at the bottom of the
toolbar.
2. Use the Pen tool to make a "w-shaped"
path. It is okay if the "w" doesn't look
the way it is supposed to be because we
will adjust it later.
Point Type

3. Click on the white Arrow tool.

4. Click on a blank area of workspace,
then onto the "w.“
5. Choose the Convert anchor tool,
which might be temporarily hiding
underneath the pen tool.
Point Type

6. Click on one of the corner points of

the "w." The point will change from a
sharp corner to a smooth curve with
handles users can drag, or vice-versa.
Aligning and Formatting Text
