PYRAMID
 A pyramid is a polyhedron of which one face, called the base, is a polygon of an
y number of sides and the other faces are triangles which have a common verte
x.
 Properties
1. The triangular faces are called
lateral faces.
2. The altitude of a pyramid is the h
length of the perpendicular
dropped from the vertex to the
plane of then base.
3. If a pyramid is cut by a plane parallel B
to the base, the lateral edges and the
altitude are divided proportionally;
In symbols we write X/B = x2/h2

PYRAMID
 A regular pyramid is one whose base is a regular polygon whose center coinci
des with the foot of the perpendicular dropped from the vertex to the base.
 Properties:

1. The lateral edges of a regular pyramid

are equal.
2. The lateral faces of a regular pyramid h l
are congruent isosceles triangles.
3. The altitudes of the lateral faces of a
B
regular pyramid are equal.
4. The slant height of a regular pyramid
is the altitude of the lateral face. Base
5. The altitude of a regular pyramid is equal
to the length of the perpendicular dropped
from the vertex to the center of the base.

Notes:
• Slant height is the altitude of a l 2 = a2 + h 2
triangular face
• The height forms a right triangle
with the apothem and the slant e2 = h2 + x2
height
• The height forms a right triangle
with x and the lateral edge.
• x is the distance from the center

to the vertex of the edge. 6

 FORMULAS:
 The volume of any pyramid is equal to one-third the
product of the base and the altitude.
h
Volume = 1/3 base x altitude
V = 1/3 Bh B
 The lateral area of a pyramid is equal to the sum of t
he areas of the lateral faces of the pyramid.
Lateral Area = Sum of Areas of Faces

PYRAMID
 FORMULAS:
 The volume of a regular pyramid is equal to one-thir
d the product of the base and the altitude.
Volume = 1/3 base x altitude
V = 1/3 Bh
 The lateral area of a regular pyramid is equal to one-
half the product of the perimeter of the base and th
e slant height.
Lateral Area = ½ perimeter of base x slant height

Lateral area = n x area
of a triangular face

A = ½ l s

Lateral area = ½ l sn

Lateral area = ½ l perimeter

An inverted square pyramid has a height equal to 8m
and a top edge equal to 3m. Initially, it contains
water to a depth of 5m.
a) What is the initial volume of the water in the
tank?
b) If additional water is to be pumped into the tank
at the rate of 20 gallons per minute, how many
