The document defines data warehousing as the process of transforming data into useful information and making it available to users in a timely manner. It explains that a data warehouse is a relational database designed for analysis that contains historical data from various sources. The document also outlines some key characteristics of data warehouses such as being subject-oriented, integrated, non-volatile and time-variant. It concludes by discussing concepts like OLTP, the ETL process, data marts, and how reporting and analytics are used with data warehouses.

The process of transforming data into information and making it available
to users in a timely enough manner to make a difference. Data warehousing is the process of constructing and using a data warehouse. Data Warehouse A data warehouse is a relational database that is designed for query and analysis. It usually contains historical data derived from transaction data, but it can include data from other sources. A single, complete and consistent store of data obtained from variety of different sources made available to end users in a way they can understand and use in a business context. Characteristics of Data Warehouse
1) Subject Oriented - A data warehouse is subject oriented as it offers information
regarding a theme instead of companies' ongoing operations. These subjects can be sales, marketing, distributions, etc. 2) Integrated - In Data Warehouse, integration means the establishment of a common unit of measure for all similar data from the dissimilar database. The data also needs to be stored in the Data warehouse in common and universally acceptable manner. 3) Non-volatile - Data warehouse is also non-volatile means the previous data is not erased when new data is entered in it. Data is read-only and periodically refreshed. This also helps to analyze historical data and understand what & when happened. 4) Time variant - The time horizon for data warehouse is quite extensive compared with operational systems. The data collected in a data warehouse is recognized with a particular period and offers information from the historical point of view. It contains an element of time, explicitly or implicitly. OLTP - OLTP (Online Transactional Processing) is a category of data processing that is focused on transaction-oriented tasks. OLTP typically involves inserting, updating, and/or deleting small amounts of data in a database. OLTP mainly deals with large numbers of transactions by a large number of users. ETL Process - ETL is short for extract, transform, load, three database functions that are combined into one tool/pipeline to pull data out of one database and place it into another database. Data Marts - A data mart is a subset of a data warehouse that is designed for a particular line of business, such as sales, marketing, or finance. In a data mart, data can be derived from an enterprise-wide data warehouse or data can also be collected directly from sources. Reporting and Analytics - Reporting is the process of organizing data into informational summaries to monitor how different areas of a business are performing. Analytics is the process of exploring data and reports to extract meaningful insights, which can be used to better understand and improve business performance. Thank you
