Station of Being, Sweden

•Architecture studio Rombout Frieling Lab and Research Institutes of Sweden have created the Station of
Being as a prototype bus stop for use in the Arctic region, which uses sound and light to alert passengers
to approaching buses.
•The bus stop in Umeå, Sweden, was designed to improve the waiting conditions for passengers using public
transport in cold weather conditions within the Arctic region. It uses lights and sounds to alert passengers
to approaching buses so that they can relax and shelter from the wind while waiting rather than constantly
having to keep a look out.
•It has a "smart roof" which contains lighting and speakers that are used to create different atmospheres
dependent on the bus that is approaching.
•The sounds and lights indicate the destination of the bus.
•It is a concave surface, that helps to rotate comfortably.

•Rather than seating, the bus stop contains timber pods as Rombout Frieling Lab's research found that people
often preferred to stand, or lean, rather than sit while waiting for a bus in the cold and snowy conditions.
•The rotating pods are designed to protect the passengers from the wind and provide privacy if needed
•"This is one of the reason why we invented the wooden pods that hang from the ceiling of the station –
the pods allow people to lean comfortably in their own 'cocoon', while they can also be rotated to create
different settings: social or private.“
•The bus stop's roof and pods are made from local timber. They can be rotated to allow a snow plough to
pass through the bus stop, so that it can easily be cleared in periods of heavy snowfall.

Milou Bergs bicycle rack

•Milou Bergs has designed a bicycle rack that only pops-up when needed, as an alternative to the "eyesore“
storage systems populating towns and cities.
•improving bicycle parking, aiming to find an alternative to the robust metal racks located around cities
and towns.
•"Bicycle racks are a particular eyesore,  "Even when not in use, they get in the way, creating physical and
visual noise.“
•It make a space visually and physically serene while keeping the functionality of storage," she continued

SCRREWING

PAVMENT

•bicycle rack works using a pop-up mechanism. When the weight of the front wheel is applied to a panel
on the floor, a bracket raises up and locks onto the back wheel – securing the bike in place
•When the bicycle is removed, the rack "disappears entirely", and is hidden flat inside the pavement
• the intention behind this is to keep public spaces open and clear of excess objects.
•For cleaning purpose the whole plate is removable, one can remove it and then clean it.
•It is very simple and easy way to operate, even when its not in use one can use that surface for any events.
The Bus Stop of National Chiao Tung University, situated in
the windy city of  Hsinchu

•Architects: CHU STUDIO Area: 153 m² Year: 2020

• A premium university that many top
students congregate. Most of students
commute to the university via buses,
the bus station is meaningful and
memorable for these commuting students
during their learning journey.

• In recent years, the on-campus bus-

stops have undergone renovations while
the university carries out its campus
renovation initiatives with reductive
aesthetics discourse.

• The site of the bus-stop, situated near

the south gate of the campus, is an
important transportation node that
connects the in and out of the campus.
Aesthetics by Landscape –

Height Difference Softened by Split-Level Design

As the site of the bus-stop is located within the car
park at the south gate next to the basketball and
tennis courts surrounded by the green area.

the height difference by softening the visual and

circulation obstacles by forming a symbiotic
relationship between the campus and environment in
a landscape-design theme complemented by a
Reductive Design to allow the landform to shape the
building form while the design also minimizes the
effect of the northerly breeze on those waiting at
the bus stop.
Spatial Construct –

Intricate Interweaving of Solidity and Lightness

Design by landscape consists simply of a large roof plate with 29 slim posts.

A sturdy volume bears the weight of users climbing the stair and the roof-cover earth
. The design team accentuates the lightness of the architectural volume by creating contrasting balance and spatial tension.

The steel columns, placed alternately, echo the fibrous roots of the fig trees in the notion of a manmade forest, which also
allows the entire structure to connect with, and to infuse itself in, the surrounding.
As there is no fixed seating in the bus stop, a series of planks of different heights were designed with ergonomic
consideration to reconcile with the landform height variation.

The users can stay in the waiting area in the postures of sitting, lying-down, and kneeling. The roofing design features
greenery so that people can easily walk on the roof, rest under the trees, lie in rattan hammock, watch sport events,
have a conversation”, etc.

The design successfully interprets the connection between the space and the creative, open, empathetic spirit of the
university culture.
