Topic: Introduction to Clothing Material

Apparel

In broad sense, Apparel is a functional & decorative


any item for human being which mainly used for
wearing purpose. In this sense jewelry, sunglass etc
also can be called apparel.

Clothing

In broad sense, Clothing refers to any item made from


cloth that may be wearable or not. For example, shirt,
pant, bed sheet, pillow cover etc.
Garments

Garments are the any wearing item specially made


from cloth such as t-shirt, shirt, trouser etc.

For an example, a bed sheet is clothing but not


garments.
But in generally, Apparel, Garment and Clothing are same.

In generally, Clothing is fiber and textile material worn to


cover parts of the human body. For example - shirts, pants,
shorts, dresses, coats, underwear etc.

Clothing is chosen based on ---


• Religion
• History
• Geographical conditions
• Age
• Gender
• Socioeconomic status etc.
Function of Clothing

 Protection: To protect the human body from


shame, outer environment or any kind of hazards. For
example, Hospital workers wear protective clothing
for sanitary reasons.

 Decoration: To decorate our body for any purpose


such as anniversary, birthday party etc.

 Identification: Easily can identify as a member of


a group or organization by the help of clothing. For
an example, Anyone can identify easily police, army
or traffic police by the clothing he worn.
Clothing Materials

Clothing is not made from a single materials. Many


materials are needed to complete a clothing or
garments. Some of them used as a main materials,
some are used for decorate the garments etc. The
materials which are needed to make a complete
garments is called clothing materials.
Clothing Materials

 The materials which have been needed to make a


complete garments is called clothing materials.
 In other word, the materials which has direct influence
on garments aesthetic or functional properties and must
be consumed during the production process is called
clothing materials.
 Such as fabric, button, zipper etc.
 A sewing machine can not be called as a clothing
materials because it does not consumed during the
production process.
Importance of Clothing Materials

 As it has direct influenced on garments aesthetic as


well as functional properties so it is most important for
the garments.
 The quality of garments depends on the quality of
clothing materials.
 The physical and mechanical properties of garments
depends on the clothing materials used.
 Sometimes value can be added with the garments by
using some clothing materials.
 The wearibility of garments depends on clothing
materials used.

 Visible clothing materials such as button, zipper.


 Invisible clothing materials such as interlining, collar
stay etc.
Trims or Trimmings

Trims are functional materials which are mandatory


for making a garments other than fabric. Such as
sewing thread, button, zipper etc. Sometimes trims
can be used as a decorative materials.

Accessories

Accessories are the materials which are not


mandatory for making a garments but use for
decorative purpose or value adding purpose. Such as
poly bag, carton, hangtag etc.

Factors consider for choosing clothing materials-

 Style of the garments: Style of the garments affect the


materials. For example, if you want to make a skirt that flows
and drapes smoothly, you should choose well draping fabric
such as silk. If you want the same skirt stiffer and thicker then
cotton or linen is suitable.
 Use of garments: Use of the garments also affect the
materials. For disposable medical garments organic cotton is
suitable. On the other hand, for long lasting window curtain
synthetic materials are suitable. Cotton feels comfort and
specially suitable for the neonant dress. Footballer and
cricketer use synthetic materials jersey for less absorbent.
 Maintenance of Garments: The maintenance of a
garment is also essential. If the piece is something that needs to
be washed or ironed often, it is wise to go for a fabric that can
take a lot of washing and is easy to press
