Objectives
Kernel:
The main module of the operating system that provides the
essential services that are needed by applications. The kernel is
responsible for managing the system resources and the
communication between hardware and software components
Shell :
Software that creates a user interface. A shell provides the user
access to the services of the operating system, and to web
browsers and e-mail clients. (CLI , GUI)

Operating System Selection
1. Verify that all hardware is certified to work with the selected OS.
2. Verify that the hardware resources meet or exceed the
published minimum requirements.
3. Confirm that the appropriate installation medium is available.
They are usually available on both CD and DVD medium.
4. If the OS is to be installed on a system that already contains
data:
–(a) Use system diagnostic tools and utilities to ensure the current OS installation
is in good condition,
–(b) Complete a full backup of all important files.
Manual – These major updates (service packs) usually require the end user to
manually connect to a web site, download and install the update.
