Brief 3: Music Video
Create a two minute sequence from an original music video to accompany a hip hop music track aimed at
an audience of 14–18 year olds.

Learners are likely to include:

• a narrative that meets the set brief by creating meaning for an audience of 14–18 year olds
• use of mise-en-scène appropriate to music videos and an audience of 14–18 year olds showing consideration of
location, sets, lighting, costume, props, casting, blocking and performance
• a range of shots appropriate to music videos including appropriate use of camera movement and variation in
angle, composition, framing and shot distance
• appropriate pace of editing for music videos
• use of editing devices to create a sense of style and match the tone of the music
• use of representations that are appropriate for a music video aimed at an audience of 14–18 year olds
• a clear attempt to construct a particular representation
• viewpoints, messages, values and beliefs that attempt to reflect those of an audience of 14–18 year olds.
Hip hop music is a broad musical genre with many sub-genres, any of which are acceptable. Definitions of
musical genres are not integral to Media
Studies; accept as hip hop music any music that can be plausibly defined as such.

Line What is a pitch? have completed so far
A pitch is a way of describing your idea to the client to exemplify that you have listened to the brief
carefully and that your idea is affordable and creative. This needs to cover everything you have done so
far?

On a Power Point cover the following questions:

- What song have you chosen and why? How does it fit with hip hop? Refer to song analysis
- What is your idea? (the more detailed the better) use your mind map as help.
- How does your idea fit with ‘hip hop’? Have you been inspired by any existing hip hop videos?
- How will it appeal to 14-18 audience? Consider lyrics (language), story, actor
- Where will you film and why? How does it fit with hip hop? What risks might you considered and
why? Any existing hip hop videos set in similar places that inspired you?
- How have you considered your audience’s interests? (survey) how did this inform your ideas?
- Who will your characters be? Why? How will they be two different social groups?
- Who will act in your video? Why? How will they be represented to fit 14-18 year olds?
- How will it be edited? Why? How is this conventional to hip hop?
- What costumes will you use? How will you achieve this and why? How does this fit with your
audience?
- Designs of graphics/titles for your production- can use ‘dafont.com’ for this-how is this
conventional? Analyse the titles.
- A storyboard explained-
