TENSES II & VERB PHRASE

THE PROGRESSIVE TENSE
Pattern be + -ing (present participle)
Meaning  The progressive tense give the idea that an
action is in progress during a particular time.

1. Present Progressive
Example: He is conducting a research on inventing an
alternative way to utilize banana peels.
2. Past Progressive
Example: They were examining E. coli in laboratory.
3. FUTURE PROGRESSIVE
Example: The student will be finishing the assignment
when the lecturer arrive.
THE PERFECT TENSE
Pattern  have + past participle
Meaning  The perfect tenses all give the idea that one
things happen before another time or event.
1. Present Perfect
Ex: I have already finished.
2. Past Perfect
Ex: I had already finished my presentation when they
arrived.
3. Future Perfect
Ex: I will already have finished when they arrive.
THE PERFECT PROGRESSIVE TENSE
Pattern  have + been + -ing (present participle)
Meaning  The perfect progressive tenses give the idea
that one event is in progress immediately before, up
to, until another time or event. The tenses are used to
express the duration of the first event.
1. Present Perfect Progressive
Ex: I have been studying for two hours.
2. Past Perfect Progressive
Ex: I had been studying for two hours before my friend
came.
3. Future Perfect Progressive
Ex: I will have been studying for two hours by the time you
arrive.
