IRIS RECOGNITION

YO7IT077-N.GREESHMA
Broad Classification
Iris Recognition:
• Iris recognition is a detection of iris of
individual’s eye by mathematical analysis of the
random patterns.
•  It combines computer vision, pattern
recognition, statistical inference and optics.
• It falls under the category called “Bio-metric
Security”.
Abstract:
• Iris recognition systems are among the most
accurate of all biometric technologies with
immense potential for use in worldwide security
applications. Steps after localization are based
on Daugman’s iris recognition system.

Image Acquisition:
• Images are generally acquired
through computer cams.

• The distance between the eye and the

camera may vary from 4-50 cm.

• Iris diameter typically should be

between 100-200 pixels for extracting
good texture.

• Careful selection of intensity level.

Iris Localization:

• Purpose: to localize that portion of the acquired

image that corresponds to an iris .
• Desired characteristics of iris localization:
▫ Sensitive to a wide range of edge contrast.
▫ Robust to irregular borders.
▫ Capable of dealing with variable occlusions.
Outlining Pupil:
Iris Normalization:
 The size of the pupil may change due to the variation of the illumination
and the associated elastic deformations in the iris texture may interface with
the results of pattern matching. For the purpose of accurate texture analysis,
it is necessary to compensate this deformation. Since both the inner and
outer boundaries of the iris have been detected, it is easy to map the iris
ring to a rectangular block of texture of a fixed size.
Image Enhancement:
Applications:

• The largest application of iris

recognition has been in the
aviation industry.
• Many of the worlds largest
airports like the Heathrow airport
of London, employ iris
recognition.
• The largest use of iris recognition
is in United Arab Emirates, where
millions of Iris Code comparisons
are done each day at all the air,
land and sea ports.
Advantages:

 Iris is relatively flat .

 Can exhaustively search an Iris database of 100,000 in

close to one second.

 Unaffected by Viewing angle (transformations are affine

and reversible).

 Iris diameter of 200 pixels gives long-term stable

information.
Disadvantages:
• Costly - some countries cannot afford to replace
their existing systems.

• Proximity to the camera is required.

• Co-operation of the person to be identified.
