• Agro-tourism or agri-tourism, is defined most broadly, any
agriculturally based operation or activity that brings visitors to a
farm or ranch.

• Agro-tourism has different definitions in different parts of the

world, and sometimes refers specifically to farm stays, or a wide
variety of activities, including buying produce directly from a farm
stand, navigating a corn maze, picking fruit, feeding animals, or
staying at a bed and breakfast on a farm.

• Agro-tourism activities fall within at least one of the five

categories. The five categories are: direct-to-consumer sales (e.g.,
farm stands, u-pick), agricultural education (e.g., school visits to a
farm), hospitality (overnight farm stays), recreation (e.g., hunting,
horseback riding), and entertainment (e.g., hayrides, harvest
dinners).
Economic Benefits

• Agricultural tourism has become a necessary means for many small

farms’ survival. Farm operators are able to ensure a more stable
income. This is because agro-tourism activities can occur during
times of the year that crops may not be in season by providing a
completely separate stream of income.

• Some studies have found that agro-tourism operations often benefit

their surrounding communities by drawing tourists to the area.

• The economic boost by the increase in traffic can be beneficial to

rural areas in need of diversified streams of income.
Economic Benefits

• Agro - tourism makes the urban people get out of their daily routine
and go back to the rural roots. There is also an aspect of education as
it involves interaction with individuals.

• Agro-tourism is the best opportunity to get to know about the

lifestyle of the farmers and how it is different from the ones who stay
away from the rural areas.

• Agro - tourism is one of the bigger industry called as rural tourism

which include resorts, markets of the off-site farmers, business made
for the leisure and hospitality of the visitors.
Need for Agro - tourism

• The population belonging to the urban areas is increasing on a daily basis

and the children belonging to them are able to view nature only on
television.

• People living in the urban areas also stopped visiting their relatives in rural
areas as they got habituated to a comfortable life in the cities.

• Also agriculture is becoming a business as most of the poor people are not
in position to afford it. There is a major need for the farmers to start a
business which would support the farm by generating income and also make
the people know about the importance of agriculture and the life of farmers.

• Agro tourism will allow farmers to sell the vegetables or any other products
grown on the farm to the visitors or tourists. This would be a source of
income for the farmers.
