BASKETBALL
Let’s talk
about the 5 Ws
What?
Basketball - a team sport
played by two teams of five
players on a rectangular
court. The objective is to
shoot a ball through a
hoop.
Who?
James Naismith - the
Inventor of Basketball,
Born on November 6,
1861 in Almonte,
Ontario, Canada.
James Naismith was a
Canadian and
American sports
coach, christian
chaplain, innovator.
When?
December
1891
Where?
Founded in 1885, as the
Young Men's Christian
Association(YMCA)departmen
t of the School for Christian
Workers in Springfield,
Massachusetts.
Why?
Because they needed a
sport to play indoors for
the winter because it was
too cold to play baseball or
football outside.
First

Peach Basket
The first baskets
that were used
were two peach
baskets that
were hung from
the balcony of
the gym.
Ball
They created a leather ball
that was sewn together with
laces, having a rubber
bladder inside. The ball
weighed a bit less than 20
ounces, and it was of brown
color. The first basketball's
had a circumference of 32
inches, which was about four
inches bigger than a standard
soccer ball

•Separating both halves of
the court is a midcourt
line.
•In the very center of the
midcourt line is the center
circle (12 feet in
diameter), where the
center toss takes place to
begin the game.

•The free throw lane is the hub
of the action in each half-
court. This rectangle is 12
feet wide — 16 feet at the
men’s pro level. Its length, as
measured from the basket to
the free throw line, is 15 feet
at all levels.

•The three-point arc is the
other important marked
feature of the court. The arc
extends around the basket in
a near semicircle, and its
distance from the basket
differs according to the level
of playing.
