Holy Mass

Ash Wednesday
Introit
You are merciful to all, O Lord, and
you hate nothing that you have
made; you overlook the sins of men
that they may repent, and you spare
them, for you are the Lord, our
God.
Be merciful to me, O God,
be merciful, for I have taken
refuge in you.
Lord! who, throughout these
forty days, For us didst fast and
pray,
Teach us with thee to mourn
our sins, And close by thee to
stay.
As thou with Satan didst
contend, And didst the
vict’ry win, O give us
strength in thee to fight, In
thee to conquer sin.
And through these days of
penitence, And through thy
Passiontide-
Yea, evermore, in life and
death, Jesu! with us abide.
Abide with us, that so, this
life Of suff’ring overpast,
An Easter of unending joy
We may attain at last!
Have mercy, O Lord, for we
have sinned.
Praise to you, Lord, King of
eternal glory!
Motet:
Call to Remembrance
Richard Farrant
Antiphon:
Between the vestibule and the altar
let the priests and Levites, the
ministers of the Lord, weep,
saying: Spare, O Lord, spare your
people, and do not close the
mouths of those who cry to you, O
Lord our God.
Psalm 51:
Choir:
Have mercy upon me, O God,
according to your loving-kindness;
in your great compassion blot out
my offenses.
All:
Wash me through and through
from my wickedness,
and cleanse me from my sin.
Choir:
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
All:
Against you only have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your
sight.
Choir:
And so you are justified when
you speak,
and upright in your judgement.
All:
Indeed I have been wicked from
my birth,
a sinner from my mother’s
womb.
Choir:
For behold, you look for truth
deep within me:
and will make me understand
wisdom secretly.
All:
Purge me from my sin, and I
shall be pure;
wash me, and I shall be clean
indeed.
Choir:
Make me hear of joy and
gladness,
that the body you have broken
may rejoice.
All:
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
Choir:
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
All:
Cast me not away from your
presence,
and take not your holy Spirit from
me.
Choir:
Give me the joy of your saving help
again,
and sustain me with your bountiful
Spirit.
All:
I shall teach your ways to the
wicked,
and sinners shall return to you.
Choir:
Deliver me from death, O God,
and my tongue shall sing of your
righteousness, O God of my
salvation.
All:
Open my lips, O Lord,
and my mouth shall proclaim your
praise.
Choir:
Had you desired it, I would have
offered sacrifice,
but you take no delight in burnt
offerings.
All:
The sacrifice of God is a troubled
spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God,
you will not despise.
O kind Creator, bow thine ear
To mark the cry, to know the tear
Before thy throne of mercy spent
In this thy holy fast of Lent.
Our hearts are open, Lord, to thee;
Thou knowest our infirmity;
Pour out on all who seek thy face
Abundance of thy pard’ning grace.
Our sins are many, this we know;
Spare us, good Lord, thy mercy show;
And for the honour of thy name
Our fainting souls to life reclaim.
Give us the self-control that springs
From discipline of outward things,
That fasting inward secretly
The soul may purely dwell with thee.
We pray thee, Holy Trinity,
One God, unchanging Unity,
That we from this, our abstinence,
May reap the fruits of penitence.
We pray thee, Holy Trinity,
One God, unchanging Unity,
That we from this, our abstinence,
May reap the fruits of penitence.
Communion Antiphon:
Those who meditate on the law of the
Lord day and night will bring forth
fruit in due season.
Motet:
O thou who dost accord us
J. S. Bach
O saving Victim! Op’ning wide
The gate of heav’n to man below!
Sore press our foes from ev’ry side;
Thine aid supply, thy strength
bestow.
To thy great Name be endless praise,
Immortal Godhead, One in Three!
O grant us endless length of days
In our true native land, with thee!
O salutaris hostia,
Quae caeli pandis ostium,
Bella premunt hositilia,
Da robur, fer auxilium.
Uni trinoque Domino
Sit sempiternal gloria,
Qui vitam sine termino
Nobis donet in patria.
Amen.

FOR ETERNAL SALVATION

Prayer after the Rosary
O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life,
death, and resurrection, has purchased for us
the rewards of eternal salvation,
Grant, we beseech Thee, that, in meditating
upon these mysteries of the Most Holy
Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may
imitate what they contain and obtain what
they promise. Through the same Christ our
Lord.
Prayer to St Michael the Archangel
St Michael the Archangel, defend us
in battle. Be our defense against the
wickedness and stares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly
pray, and do thou, O Prince of the
heavenly hosts, by the power of
God, cast into hell Satan, and all the
evil spirits who prowl about the
world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

HAIL MARY

GLORY BE
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail;
Lo! o’er ancient forms departing,
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith, for all defects supplying,
Where the feeble senses fail.
To the everlasting Father,
And the Son who reigns on high,
With the Holy Ghost proceeding
Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honour, blessing,
Might, and endless majesty.
Tantum ergo Sacramentum

Et antiquum documentum

Sensuum defectui.
Genitori Genitoque
Laus et iubilatio,
Salus, honor, virtus quoque
Sit et benediction;
Procedenti ab utroque
Compar sit laudation.
Amen.
℣. You have given them bread from
heaven.

℟. Containing in itself all sweetness.

Let us pray.
Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist as the
memorial of your suffering and death. May our worship
of this sacrament of your body and blood, help us to
experience the salvation won for us, and the peace of the
kingdom, where you live with the Father and the Holy
Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Holy God, we praise thy name!
Lord of all, we bow before thee;
All on earth thy scepter claim;
All in heav’n above adore thee.
Infinite thy vast domain,
Everlasting is thy reign.
Infinite thy vast domain.
Everlasting is thy reign.
Hark! the loud celestial hymn
Angel choirs above are raising;
Cherubim and seraphim
In unceasing chorus praising,
Fill the heav’ns with sweet accord;
‘Holy, holy, holy Lord!’
Fill the heav’ns with sweet accord;
‘Holy, holy, holy Lord!’
