NATIONAL EDUCATION
PHILOSOPHY
 Education in Malaysia is an on-going effort towards
developing the potential of individuals in a holistic
and integrated manner, so as to produce individuals who
are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and
physically balanced and harmonious based on a firm
belief in and devotion to God. Such an effort is designed
to produce Malaysian citizens who are knowledgeable and
competent, who possess high moral standards and who are
responsible and capable of achieving a high level of
personal well being as well as being able to contribute
to the harmony and betterment of the family, society and
the nation at large.
AIMS OF KBSR ENGLISH
LANGUAGE SYLLABUS
 To equip learners with basic skills and
knowledge of the English Language
 To enable learners to communicate, both orally
and in writing, in and out of school.
OBJECTIVES OF KBSR ENGLISH
LANGUAGE SYLLABUS
 By the end of primary school, learners should be able
to achieve following:-
1) Listen to and understand simple spoken English in
certain given contexts.
2) Ask and answer questions, speak and express themselves
clearly to others using simple language.
3) Acquire good reading habits to understand, enjoy, and
extract information from a variety of texts.
4) Write legibly and express ideas in simple language.
5) Show and awareness and appreciation of moral values as
well as love for the nation.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
LISTENING SKILLS
 Aims :
 - develop learners ability to listen to and
understand the spoken language better.

 By the end of their primary schooling learners


should be able to:
 - Listen to and discriminate similar and
different sounds of the English language.
 - Listen to and repeat accurately the
correct pronunciation of words, and the correct
intonation and word stress when uttering
phrases, expressions and sentences.
 - Acquire vocabulary and understand the
meaning of words and phrases in context.
SPEAKING SKILLS
 By the end of their primary schooling learners should
be able to:
Ø Speak clearly by pronouncing words accurately,
speaking with the correct stress, intonation and
sentences rhythm.
Ø Talk confidently on topics of interest in simple
language
Ø Express thoughts and feelings and talk about things
heard, read, seen and viewed in simple language
Ø Ask question politely to obtain information and
clarification
Ø Tell stories based on pictures and other stimuli,
and recite simple poems.
READING SKILLS
 The component in reading emphasize the teaching of the
skills of reading to enable learners to become
independent readers.
 By the end of their primary schooling learners should
be able to read a variety of text. Learners should
be able to:
Ø Acquire word recognition and word attack skills so
that they are able to recognize sight words
Ø Acquire key words at various stages of development
Ø Read and understand phrases, sentences, paragraphs,
and whole texts based on the key words suitable to
their level of development
Ø Use the dictionary to get the appropriate meaning of
word and phrases.


WRITING SKILLS
 Focus on develop learners writing ability beginning at the
word and phrase levels and progress to the sentence and
paragraph level.
 By the end of their primary schooling learners should be
able to write list, messages, letters. They should be able
to:
Ø Copy correctly
Ø Makes words to linear and non linear texts
 - Match word to word
 - Match word to phrase
 - Match word to picture or symbol
Ø Complete texts with the missing words, phrase or sentence
Ø Spell correctly and take dictation accurately.

LANGUAGE
CONTENTS
 To enable learners to become familiar with the
different patterns of sound and different
spelling of words that have the same sound.
 The list below must be taught:
1) Consonants, vowel and diphthong
2) Consonants clusters
3) Stresses in two-three-and four syllabus word.
4) Stress in compound word.
5) Sentence, stress and intonation
6) Homograph and homophone
7) Contraction

qThe list of words selected for teaching is based
on the Learning Area.
qA sample of the more common or high frequency
words associated with potential topics as well as
its utility value in classroom activities has been
identified.
qThe suggested word list is only the minimum for
the particular year.
qTeachers are encouraged to widen this list
according to the level and ability of their pupils.

 Interpersonal intelligence is reflected when
learners are taught the polite forms of
language expression

their musical intelligence is developed.

 Content is drawn from other subjects like
 -Science
 -Geography
 -Environmental Studies
 Content is also drawn from daily news items as
well as current affairs.

 By focusing on language use in society.
 Students will be equipped with the requisite
skills that will enable them to achieve the
long term goals of pursuing higher education,
being more effective in workplace and of
