What Is Environment Management?

Definition:
 Each step in resource use can affect the environment for better
or
worse. The control of these steps is known as environment
management.
OR
 It’s process by which environmental health is regulated.

1
What Are The Steps Involved?

 Sustainable utilization
Think of a resource you use and track it through diff. steps.

e.g. The cotton in cloths you are wearing-

-what other resources are needed to move resource to next?
-what waste products are generated during that operation?
-how are they likely to be disposed of?
-what pollutants are generated in the complete process?
 It needs management plan or system to implement, manage

and maintain environmental goals. 2

 EM involves the wise use of activity and resources to have an
impact on the world.
 EM does not come without costs.
 This include-investment of resources like money and time
-cost of training the employees
-cost of hiring consultants / other professionals
-cost of technical resources for studying enviroment
& it’s impacts

3
Importance / Significance
 To take care of the planet is the responsibility of everybody in
every type of profession.
Benefits:-prevention of pollution & conservation of natural
resources
-increased energy efficiency
-stronger envi. performance and
An attention to and responsibility for taking care of the earth
Following a management plan for envi. is a great way to build
strong employee relationships and encourage company support

around one goal.
Try to assess at own level…

• How much amount of resources we have used?

• What was it’s source?
• What effect does it cause on environment?
• How could we reduce their use?
• Examples: Plastic, Fossil fuel, Water, Paper, Electrical energy,
etc.

Environmental Policy

 Definition:
 It’s a written statement that defines the missions of

organization’s, attitude and framework of actions towards EM.
  The plan and policies of authority with respect to

     environment.
 Environmental policy-- includes,

1. vision and core values of the organization,
2. compliance with legal and other requirements
6

3. commitments to environmental protection through various
    actions- Resource/ raw material utilization
- Prevention of pollution at source
- Reduction of wastes
- Appropriate design and operational management
- Minimum use of energy
- Creating awareness and training for employees
 EP is a part of environmental management system (EMS)

7
Environmental Management System (EMS)

 It refers to the system for managing an organization’s
environmental programs in a comprehensive, systematic ,
   planned and documented manner
 It adopts organizational structure, planning  and resources for
developing, implementing and maintaining the policy for
   protection of the environment
 Thus, industry/organization has to have
         – written objectives for EMS

8
Continued……
– written/documented procedures/processes for the
   officers/employees who are involved
– assigning responsibilities to employees
– environmental audit : to know the environmental aspect and
impacts of company’s activities ; EMS certification for relevant
standard such as ISO 14001,EMAS (Eco-management and
   audit scheme)

9
What is an Environmental audit?

 Key to restrict the merciless damage to environment in the

     name of economic development
 It’s a documented verification of process of EMS to obtain

evidence for determining whether the process conforms to
    criteria decided by the organization
 It’s  a detailed periodic evaluation of organization’s

     performance against the set objectives
 The synopsis and major/minor irregularities shown in the
10
audit has to be conveyed to the management
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
 It refers to review the potential impact of a project to be

     launched by an organization
 It includes:

- Assessment of existing environmental status
- Analysis of various factors of ecosystem like tress,
  ponds, wildlife
- Analysis of adverse impacts of the project to be started
- Impact on people living in the neighborhood
11
A Case Study : Green Tax
 Cost benefit analysis of polluting activities needs calculation
 What happen if each have to pay compensatory green taxes?
 Fight between environmentalist and economist on

     environmental issues of policy
 Free market economy guarantees efficient use of resources

and economization of environmental usages by people
 Revenue generated must be implemented for balancing the

quantity of pollution by plantation and other such measures
 Case of Persian Gulf shipping lanes to restrict oil spills
12
Why to have an EMS?

 it lead to maintain and improve the quality of environment

 lead to resource conservation

 protect both human health as well as environment

 meet environmental expectations of the customer

 satisfy investors

 lessen interference from regulatory authorities

 lead to good public relations

13
Continued…..
 it provide confidence to stakeholders in ensuring that
   regulatory compliances are carried out
 lead to enhanced image and market share
 lessen liabilities
 provide incentive for technology development and its transfer
