search, to obtain information and so on.

 LIBRARY MISSION

To provide continuous access to the Knowledge


and Information in the Library to the students and
faculty of the Institute for achieving excellence in their
chosen disciplines.
 The PES library enables access to students to various books, periodicals
etc.
 It is open until midnight on all days and for 24 hrs during the
examinations.
 It uses an automated library management system so that books can be
borrowed at any time of the day or night and also make reservations
online.
 Books and other material are easily available for reference in the library.
 The trained library staff also assist students. In addition to this the faculty
members upload all their lecture and research notes on the PES Intranet
which are available to the students by keying in a password.
 High-end, sophisticated computing facilities are available to meet project
requirements and enable research.
 It is developed by the company Environ Soft
 LIBSOFT is an integrated, multi-user, user-friendly Library Management Software
Package.
 All Library routines and high level documentation services are possible in a user
friendly manner therefore; Users can use it with confidence even without special
training. 
 LIBSOFT is developed with the help of advice and intellectual input from experts
in library profession. Therefore database management and rendering services
using LIBSOFT is very user friendly.

 Book Accession
The details of a book can be easily obtained.

 Multimedia Accession
The details of non-print media(that is resources other than books) can be easily obtained.

 Classification
LIBSOFT implements the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme(22nd Edition) for the
classification of books.
 Journal Accession
The various journals available can be easily viewed ,issuing
details about the journal at a moments notice becomes possible. It
is also very useful while entering the details about new journal
that has been acquired.
 Membership
The LIBSOFT facilitates the registration of members, updation
of the data pertaining to existing members, search facility and
also the cancellation of a membership.

 Issuing of books
LIBSOFT supports bar-coding facility which
makes the issuing of books easier and very efficient.

 Returns
LIBSOFT helps the librarian to keep track of the
date when a book has to be returned, whether any fine is due
and so on.

 Renewals
LIBSOFT helps to keep track of those which are
renewed( i.e. issued to the same user repeatedly).

 Reservations
LIBSOFT enables the users to reserve books
online beforehand.
 Library Statistics
LIBSOFT helps the librarian keep track of the
number of members, demand for various books and so on by
providing statistical data for each.

 Information Retrieval
Any information required by either the user or the
librarian can be retrieved very quickly through LIBSOFT.
 The library information system was implemented 12
years back.
 It took about a year to implement the system.
 At the time we had a collection of around 5000 books.
 The overall cost of implementing LIBSOFT (internet

version) software costed 3-4 lakhs.


 LIS(Library Information System)
 The purpose of computerized system is to provide

pinpointed ,immediate and correct information.


 It provides depth precise, in time information at a

moment’s notice by entering just a few key words.


 It helps to present the same data to different people

with different presentation/view.


 Example: VTU, AICTE
 Library acquires books from various vendors
 Books are ordered as per requests and requirements of

students, faculty and other staff


 It tries getting what is in the syllabus and additional material

for enhancing knowledge

 click on accession no. and enter the accession no.

 Once entered & modified it gets automatically updated
 Refers to the physical stock verification
Stock Verification
 Mainly done to ascertain how many books are lost or

missing
 All books are returned & arranged as per accession no.
 Scanners are used to check stock
 Books are classified on the basis of subjects and given an
accession no.
 They are classified on the basis of Dewey Decimal

Classification (DCC) which is an International System


 Bar code is printed on the cover page and the first page of

the book
 It is the computer database used in our library
information system.
 It is used to store all the information and data required

for the library.


 Rupees 8,00,000 every year.
 5 Terabytes of memory storage
 It is linked through the OPAC software.
OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue)
 Allows users to search all materials (such as Books, Journals,

Magazines, Digital material etc.) available in the library


collection.
 Only Library Members can access Full text Digital material

by using their User ID and Password.. 


 Restrictions on access and downloading of licensed e-
Resources 
The e-Resources are licensed for the non-profit educational
use of the Institute. Copyright law governs use of these e-
Resources.
Doing the following things are strictly prohibited:
Systematic downloading, distributing, or retaining
substantial portions.
Forwarding electronic versions of articles or the use of
electronic articles for commercial purposes.
Strictly prohibited to download entire journal issue or
databases or an entire e-book.
 Improper use can result in denial of access to the entire institute.
 Library users are permitted to make digital copies temporarily to
their own hard disc for non-commercial purposes only.
 Terms does not permit forwarding electronic versions of articles
nor the use of electronic articles for commercial purposes.
 Publishers will cut off access requiring Library to investigate and
take action on those who have misused the e-Resources.
 This prevents access by the majority of responsible users to
information needed for their research and learning.
 It becomes obligatory on the library’s part to investigate such
misuses and report the same to the publishers.
 The internet speed should be high.
 Good systems should be used in the network for fast

processing.
 Good switches and routers.
 Should maintain backups of all the data
 The LIS administrator should be well versed with

system.
 It was impossible to accomplish the task manually with
a minimal staff of 20 people.
 Lots of confusion regarding which books are available?
 Which books are not available?
 How many new books to order and so on.
 It was not possible to provide instant information

(correct).
 Instant information can be provided due to the
transparency of the system.

data can be downloaded.

 Recreation of data becomes easier through

downloading required information.


 The processing speed currently is 8mbps.This can be
increased for faster downloading and processing.
 Storage space is 5 terabyte. This can be further

increased in the future.


 Only 5% of digital books available. This can be

increased.
 Web tool to enable comments about articles and books.
 Scope for online requests by students.
 Provision for utilization of RFID tags can be made.
In the present world of technological developments and
globalization, it is very important to have a highly
competent library information system for the efficient
usage and maintenance of our resources.
