List of Experiments

• Performance analysis of micro-axial flow fans

attached to heat sinks.
• Performance analysis of centrifugal blowers.
• Study of flow through axial compressors.
• Performance analysis of turbochargers.

Centrifugal Blower
The Blower Laws - Evaluating Blower
Performance

• Characterized by dependent and independent

variables.
• Dependent: Static Pressure (Ps)
• Flow Rate ( Q )
• Power Required ( W )
• Independent: Fan Size (D)
• Fan Speed (N)
• Fluid Density (ρ )

Anatomy of A Centrifugal Compressors
Study of Pressure and velocity
distributions in Aerofoil cascades.
• An aerofoil is build up around a basic camber line, which
is usually a curricular or a parabolic arc.
• An camber line is thus the skeleton of the aerofoil.
• A thickness t is distributed over the camber line with the
leading and trailing edge circles that finally form an
aerofoil.
Aerofoil Cascades

Generate, different
geometric angles,
blade setting and
their relationship
with the flow angles
for a compressor
cascade.

Measure flow and pressure distribution in upstream and

downstream of an aerofoil cascade.
Measure pressure distribution on the surface of an aerofoil.
Study of Flow distribution and
Performance of Axial Compressors.
• Study the design and geometry of an axial
flow compressor.
• Run the compressor at constant speed and
variable flow rate.
• Run the compressor at variable speed.
• Study the characteristics of axial flow
compressor.
• Measure the velocity distribution along the
height of the blade.

Turbocharger Design

Workings of the Turbocharger:

1. Exhaust waste from the engine cylinder travels towards the
turbocharger.
2. Exhaust waste powers the turbine wheel which is connected to
the compressor wheel by the turbine shaft.
3. Turbine shaft rotates the compressor wheel drawing in and
compressing cool air.
4. Compressed air travels through an intercooler for further cooling
before reaching the engine cylinder.
5. Fuel mixes with the compressed air and is ignited by the spark
plug.
6. Exhaust waste is let out by the combustion and the process
repeats itself (Nice).
