Gerund and infinitives

 some verbs can be followed by both gerunds and

infinitives with no change in meaning
e.g. like, love, hate, prefer, continue, begin...

with a change in meaning

e.g. (to) stop

gerund : He stopped smoking.
 he smoked for a while and then quit.
infinitive: He stopped to smoke.
 he stopped to take a break and took out a cigarette.

e.g. (to) forget

gerund : She forgot locking the door.
 she did lock the door, but then she forgot she had done it.
infinitive: She forgot to lock the door.
 She did not lock the door because she forgot.
e.g. (to) remember
gerund : She remembers calling her friend.
 She called her friend and remembers that she did.

infinitive: She remembered to call her friend.

 She had a list of things to do, calling her friend was one of them

e.g. (to) regret

gerund : They regret letting him go.
