What is learning?
• the permanent changes in the
behavior of an individual (Morgan,
2005)
• the process where knowledge is
created through the transformation
of experience (Kolb, 1984)
The Different Definitions of
Learning Styles
• habitual and preferred ways of absorbing,
processing and retaining new information as
well as skills (Reid, 1995)
• cognitive, affective and physiological traits
that are relatively stable indicators of how
learners perceive, interact with and respond to
the learning environment (Keefe, 1979)
• learners’ consistent ways of responding to and
using stimuli in the context of learning
(Claxton & Ralston, 1978)
Cont’d
• a consistent pattern of behavior and
performance by which an individual
approaches educational experience (Bennet,
1990)
• those educational conditions under which a
student is most likely to learn (Stewart &
Felicetti, 1992)
• as learners’ natural, habitual, and preferred
ways of absorbing, processing, and retaining
new information and skills (Kinsella, 1995)
Additional info 
• learning styles could be genetic
(Kinsella, 1995)
• learning styles could change with the
change of an individual’s age (Price,
Dunn & Sanders, 1980; Reid, 1987)
Learning Styles Models
• Kolb’s Learning Styles and Experiential Learning
Model (1984)
– The phases are concrete experience, reflective
observation, abstract conceptualization and active
experimentation
• The Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Model (1993)
– The assumptions:
• students preferences for learning is possible to be
identified
• possible to use a variety of instructional procedures
as well as to modify instructional environment to
match the preferences
• The VAK Learning Style (Reid, 1987)
– Visual - Ss learns best through visual
stimuli like pictures, charts and graphs
– Auditory – Ss learns best by listening to
stories, lectures or videotapes
– Kinesthetic – Learns best when they are
presented with practical information and
when they are allowed to be physically
mobile
Purpose of study
Identify most preferred learning
styles of students in SMKTIZ

Identify most preferred learning

styles according to gender.

To implement appropriate styles to

enhance students performance in
English Language Learning.
Delimitations of Study
• 278 students will be selected.

• SMKTIZ, Dungun, Terengganu.

• 39 to 40 students will be the representative

from each form to participate

• exclude form 3 students due to TOV (Take

of value) test.
Instruments
• VAK questionnaire was used.

• Adapted from ‘Discover Your

Preferred Learning Style’ from
BrainBoxx website.

• Glossary was been given as to assist

students.
Data Collection
• The students’Procedures
respondents were seated individually
to prevent them from discussing and comparing
answers with their friends. The questionnaires were
given to the students followed by explanation by
the teacher. The students responded by marking a
tick to each boxes that best described their learning
preference. This session took two minutes roughly.
The teacher collected the questionnaires
immediately after the students completed them.
Next the data from 18 items questionnaire were
analyzed and presented in a form of frequency
through bar charts.
