LEADERSHIP

Leadership Story
Once upon a time, there was a general who was
leading his army into battle against an enemy ten times
the size of his own. Along the way to the battle field, the
troops stopped by a small temple to pray for victory.
The general held up a coin and told his troops, "I am
going to implore the gods to help us crush our enemy. If
this coin lands with the heads on top, we'll win. If it's
tails, we'll lose. Our fate is in the hands of the gods. Let's
pray wholeheartedly."
After a short prayer, the general tossed the
coin. It landed with the heads on top. The
troops were overjoyed and went into the battle
with high spirits. Just as predicted, the smaller
army won the battle. The soldiers were exalted,
"It's good to have the gods on our side! No one
can change what they have determined."

"Really?" The general show them the

coin--both sides of it were heads.
Leadership
It is the art of influencing people

It is the ability of an individual to

influence, motivate and enable others to
contribute toward the effectiveness and
success of the organization which they
are members.

“It is getting someone to willingly

do what they don’t want to do.”

FACTORS
OF
LEADERSHIP
 follower
 leader
 situation
 communication
Four Levels of
Leadership
FIRST LEVEL:

PERSONAL
Leadership starts with the person.
Leaders must be trustworthy.
Leadership requires character and competence.

Great leaders have personal power…

THE PARABLE OF THE PENCIL
"There are 5 things you need to know," he told the pencil, "Before I
send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget,
and you will become the best pencil you can be.“

"One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow
yourself to be held in Someone's hand.“

"Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but
you'll need it to become a better pencil."

Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make."

"Four: The most important part of you will always be what's inside."

"And Five: On every surface you are used on, you must leave your
mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write."

The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the
box with purpose in its heart.
-2-
One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to
be held in God's hand. And allow other human beings to access you for the
many gifts you possess.

Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going
through various problems in life, but you'll need it to become a stronger
person.

Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.

Four: The most important part of you will always be what's on the inside.

And Five: On every surface you walk through, you must leave your mark. No
matter what the situation, you must continue to do your duties.

Allow this parable on the pencil to encourage you to know that you are a
special person and only you can fulfill the purpose to which you were born to
accomplish.

Never allow yourself to get discouraged. Think that your life is significant and
capable of making a change.
SECOND LEVEL:

INTERPERSONAL
Leadership requires effective interpersonal
skills & expectations.
Leadership requires trust.
Trust builds communication, empathy, and
productive interdependency.
THIRD LEVEL:

MANAGERIAL
 As trust is built, you can confidently empower
individuals.
Leadership requires skills such as:
• Teambuilding
• Delegation “Tell me and I will forget; show
• Communication me and I will remember; involve
me and I will understand.”
• Empowerment Chinese proverb
FOURTH LEVEL:

ORGANIZATIONAL
 With empowered individuals, the organization
can align its systems and structure better with
the organization’s mission and needs.
FOURTH LEVEL:

ORGANIZATIONAL
Leadership requires creating an effective
system.
Communication, training, rewards, vision,
strategy must be aligned and mutually
supportive.
Creating a vision and providing proper
strategic leadership.

LEADERSHIP THEORIES

The Trait Theory

Behavioral Theory
Environment Theory
Principle-centered Theory
Humanistic Theory
Exceptional Theory
Contingency Theory
Path-goal Theory
LEADERSHIP THEORIES
The Trait Theory
The leader is conceived to be a great
man whose superior endowments
induce other to follow him.

Behavioral Theory
It is based upon the belief that great leaders
are made, not born. According to this
theory, people can learn to become leaders
through teaching and observation.
LEADERSHIP THEORIES
Environment Theory
It explains leadership on the basis of
situations and crises that provide
opportunities for people to propose solutions
or exhibit heroic actions that place them in
the position of leadership.

Principle-Centered Theory
It says that there are underlying values and
principles that leaders should follow, and
these values and principles can be the
foundation upon which success can be built
upon.

LEADERSHIP THEORIES
Humanistic Theory
It is based on the hypotheses that groups will
be more effective and members will be better
satisfied when the leader allows freedom to
satisfy their needs for achievement and self
actualization.

Exceptional Theory
It maintains that leadership is most likely
achieved by the member who succeeds in
initiating and reinforcing the expectations
that he will maintain the role structure and
goal direction.
LAW OF HARVEST
“Sow a thought, reap an action;
sow an action, reap a habit;
sow a habit, reap a character;
sow a character, reap a
destiny…”
LEADERSHIP THEORIES
Contingency Theory
This theory proposes that a given pattern of
leadership behavior will lead to effective group
performance in some circumstances and
ineffective in some cases.

The optimal course of action is contingent

(dependent) upon the internal and external
situation.

 Fred Fiedler’s situational contingency theory holds that group

effectiveness depends on an appropriate match between a leader’s style
(essentially a trait measure) and the demands of the situation.
LEADERSHIP THEORIES

Path-Goal Theory
It was developed to describe the way that
leaders encourage and support their followers
in achieving the goals they have been set by
making the path that they should take clear
and easy.

In particular, leaders:
• Clarify the path so subordinates know which way to go.
• Remove roadblocks that are stopping them going there.
• Increasing the rewards along the route.
