Technology Infusion

Presentation

SETTING
 This presentation is based on my Kindergarten
class.
 There are 16 students: 9 males and 7 females; 4 are
African American and 12 are White
 I have the EIP (Early Intervention Program) class,
which means they need some extra help and aren’t
“on grade level” compared to their peers.
Demographics
 The school I teach at is located in Middle Georgia, near
the Air Force base. Therefore, most of the families at
our school are military. A lot of the students have a
parent deployed and are being raised by the other parent
or some other guardian.

 Most families at our school are in a “better financial

situation” than families from other schools in the district.
Technology to Support the Curriculum

We use a variety of technology in our classroom. The

following are examples:
 Tape player/headphones for the Listening Center

 CD/tape player during phonics, calendar, reading,

writing, and for physical movement

 Computers both in the classroom and the Computer

Lab
Listening Center
 Students use the tape player and headphones to
listen to a book on tape. They follow along with
the story as the person reads to them. They learn to
track print. Even though they cannot yet read the
actual words, they follow through with their fingers
from top to bottom, left to right on the page. This
gets them ready to read actual words later on.
CD’s and Tapes During Lessons
 I use a lot of CD’s and tapes during my lessons. I
find that with my children, anything that can be
sung to a tune is learned quicker. Therefore, we
use a song (daily), “Who Let the Alphabet Out,” to
practice our ABC’s during Phonics.
 During calendar, we sing the days of the week to
“The Adam’s Family,” months of the year to “10
Little Indians,” and the seasons (not to a “known”
song).
CD’s and Tapes Continued…
 I play simple classical music very softly during Reading and
Writing Workshops. I have found that the students stay on
task better when there is something for them to listen to.

 Finally, I use a song when the students get “antsy” to help

them get the “jitters” out. It helps with their gross motor
skills as they have to listen to the way the music is being
presented and do what it says to do. For example one version
is to skip, one is to hop, etc.
Computers
 We utilize computers both in our classroom and in the
computer lab. We have 4 classroom computers, which limits
the number of students who can be on at a time, but the
computer lab allows everyone to have a turn at the same time.
The students access Classworks, Star Fall, and Fun Brain.
Each program helps the children focus on Language Arts,
Math, and Reading, all of which follow the Kindergarten
GPS.
Computers Continued…
 I use my teacher workstation which is hooked to
the TV to present PowerPoint lessons and United
Streaming videos. The kids love this since it’s
something different.
Differences in Student Learning
 All of my students, but particularly my lower
students, have come so far in 9 weeks.! Through
independent use of the computers, singing along to
CD’s, and listening to stories on tapes, all of my
children can now write their name and identify at
least 19 uppercase and 13 lowercase letters. They
weren’t able to do that when they came to me.
 They get so excited when I use any kind of
technology (that isn’t me sitting in front of them
teaching/talking). They love and want to learn!
Issues with Technology
 Headphones don’t always work
 All computers don’t always work at the same time

 Internet doesn’t always cooperate

When these issues occur, not every student can benefit

from the use of technology. I have to stop what I’m
doing to put in a work order and wait until the
maintenance technician comes around to fix the
problems. Only then can everyone benefit from
technology, for possibly a day or two until something
else fails to work properly.
Conclusion
 All in all, the students love to use technology to
learn in the classroom. It is amazing to see what
they pick up and pay attention to when there is
some kind of “something” used other than me
“talking at them.” I can’t wait to see where my
Kindergarteners go from here as we incorporate
more and more technology into the classroom!
