POWER SECTOR

An energy-consuming
sector that consists of
electricity only and
combined heat and
power(CHP) plants
whose primary business
is to sell electricity, or
electricity and heat, to
the public.

THERMAL
NUCLEAR POWER
Nuclear power is produced
by controlled (i.e., non-
explosive) nuclear reactions.
Commercial and utility plants
currently use nuclear fission
reactions to heat water to
produce steam, which is then
used to generate electricity.
Nuclear power provides about
6% of the world's energy and
13–14% of the world's
electricity.
Nuclear energy is released from the nucleus of an atom. Nuclear
reactions like fusion(when two atomic nuclei combine to form a
single heavy nucleus) and fission (when a single heavy nucleus
splits into two smaller nuclei), release very high amounts of
energy. The mass of an atom gets converted into energy.
What are the Advantages of Nuclear
Energy?
•Nuclear reactions release a million times more energy, as compared to hydro or
wind energy. Hence, a large amount of electricity can be generated. Presently, 12-
18% of the world's electricity is generated through nuclear energy.

•The biggest advantage of nuclear energy is that there is no release of greenhouse

gases (carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, chlorofluorocarbon) during nuclear
reaction. There is no release of carbon d-oxide at the time of nuclear reaction.

•Nuclear reactors make use of uranium as fuel. Fission reaction of a small amount
of uranium generates large amount of energy. Currently, the high reserves of
uranium found on Earth, are expected to last for another 100 years.

•High amount of energy can be generated from a single nuclear power plant. Also,
nuclear fuel is inexpensive and easier to transport.
NUCLEAR POWER IN INDIA
Nuclear power is the fourth-largest source of electricity in India after
thermal hydroelectric and renewable sources of electricity.

As of 2010, India has 20 nuclear reactors in operation in six nuclear power plants,
generating 4,780 MW, while 5 other plants are under construction and are
expected to generate an additional 2,720 MW.

India's nuclear power industry is undergoing rapid expansion with plans to

increase nuclear power output to 64,000 MW by 2032.

India stands 9th in the world in terms of number of operational nuclear power
reactors.

The Indian nuclear power industry is expected to undergo a significant expansion

in the coming years thanks in part to the passing of The Indo-US nuclear deal.

This agreement will allow India to carry out trade of nuclear fuel and
technologies with other countries and significantly enhance its power generation
capacity.

WIND ENERGY
Definition

 The terms wind energy or wind

power describe the process by which
the wind is used to generate
mechanical power or electricity.
Wind turbines convert the kinetic
energy in the wind into mechanical
power. This mechanical power can
be used for specific tasks (such as
grinding grain or pumping water) or
a generator can convert this
mechanical power into electricity.
Wind power in india
• The development of wind power in
India began in the 1990s, and has significantly
increased in the last few years.
• Although a relative newcomer to the wind
industry compared with Denmark or the US,
India has the fifth largest installed wind power
capacity in the world.
• ]In 2009-10 India's growth rate is highest among
the other top four countries.
This aerial view of a wind power plant shows how a group of wind
turbines can make electricity for the utility grid. The electricity is sent
through transmission and distribution lines to homes, businesses,
schools, and so on.
Advantages of wind power
1. The wind is free and can be captured efficiently.
2. It does not cause green house gases or other pollutants.
3. Although wind turbines can be very tall each takes up only a small
plot of land.
4. Many people find wind farms an interesting feature of the
landscape.
5. Remote areas that are not connected to the electricity power grid
can use wind turbines to produce their own supply.
6 Vast range of people and businesses can use them.

Disadvantages
The main disadvantage regarding wind power is down to the winds
unreliability factor.

Wind turbines generally produce allot less electricity than the average
fossil fuelled power station.

Wind turbine construction can be very expensive and costly to

surrounding wildlife during the build process.

The noise pollution from commercial wind turbines is sometimes similar

to a small jet engine

Protests and/or petitions usually confront any proposed wind farm

development.

Solar power sector
Introduction
Solar power is the conversion of
sunlight into electricity, either
directly using photovoltaics (PV), or
indirectly using concentrated solar
power (CSP).

Concentrated solar power systems

use lenses or mirrors and tracking
systems to focus a large area of
sunlight into a small beam.

Photovoltaics converts light into

electric current using the
photoelectric effect.
Solar energy sector in India
Solar Energy is one of the fastest growing
sectors of the Renewable Energy Sector in
India. The estimated potential of Solar
Energy in India is 5000 trillion units per
year.

Private investors have invested US$20

billion to build plants to make
photovoltaic cells. The Government of
India has announced incentives to
manufacture solar cells and panels.
Current status of solar
power in india :
The amount of solar energy produced
in India is less than 1% of the total
energy produced.

The grid-interactive solar power as of

December 2010 was merely 10 MW.
Government-funded solar energy in
India only accounted for approximately
6.4 MW-yr of power as of 2005.
 as ofOctober 2009, India is currently ranked number
one along with the United States in terms of installed
solar power generation capacity.

 The major constraint to Solar Energy Generation in

India is the high initial costs for setting up.

 The solar energy industry requires additional

incentives by the government to encourage solar power
adoption to give an added boost to the sector in India.
Future plans
In July 2009, India unveiled a US$19 billion plan to produce
20 GW of solar power by 2020.

Under the plan, the use of solar-powered equipment and

applications would be made compulsory in all government
buildings, as well as hospitals and hotels.

On November 18, 2009, it was reported that India was

ready to launch its National Solar Mission under the
National Action Plan on Climate Change, with plans to
generate 1,000 MW of power by 2013.
Government encouraging Solar energy
