NUCLEAR POWER
Nuclear power is produced
by controlled (i.e., non-
explosive) nuclear reactions.
Commercial and utility plants
currently use nuclear fission
reactions to heat water to
produce steam, which is then
used to generate electricity.
Nuclear power provides about
6% of the world's energy and
13–14% of the world's
electricity.
Nuclear energy is released from the nucleus of an atom. Nuclear
reactions like fusion(when two atomic nuclei combine to form a
single heavy nucleus) and fission (when a single heavy nucleus
splits into two smaller nuclei), release very high amounts of
energy. The mass of an atom gets converted into energy.
What are the Advantages of Nuclear
Energy?
•Nuclear reactions release a million times more energy, as compared to hydro or
wind energy. Hence, a large amount of electricity can be generated. Presently, 12-
18% of the world's electricity is generated through nuclear energy.
•Nuclear reactors make use of uranium as fuel. Fission reaction of a small amount
of uranium generates large amount of energy. Currently, the high reserves of
uranium found on Earth, are expected to last for another 100 years.
•High amount of energy can be generated from a single nuclear power plant. Also,
nuclear fuel is inexpensive and easier to transport.
NUCLEAR POWER IN INDIA
Nuclear power is the fourth-largest source of electricity in India after
thermal hydroelectric and renewable sources of electricity.
As of 2010, India has 20 nuclear reactors in operation in six nuclear power plants,
generating 4,780 MW, while 5 other plants are under construction and are
expected to generate an additional 2,720 MW.
India stands 9th in the world in terms of number of operational nuclear power
reactors.
This agreement will allow India to carry out trade of nuclear fuel and
technologies with other countries and significantly enhance its power generation
capacity.

Disadvantages
The main disadvantage regarding wind power is down to the winds
unreliability factor.
Wind turbines generally produce allot less electricity than the average
fossil fuelled power station.

ALL THE ENERGY SOURCES LEAD TO
GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY…………
The electricity sector in India supplies
electricity which accounts for consumption by
more than 17% of global population.
The Energy policy of India is predominantly
controlled by the Government of India's Ministry
of Power, Ministry of Coal and Ministry of New
Renewable Energy and administered locally
by Public Sector Undertakings.
CURRENT SCENARIO
India has the 5th largest power generation capacity
in the world with an installed capacity of 152 GW
as on 30 September 2010.
Average per capita consumption of electricity in
India was around 771 kWh during 2009-10.
FUTURE PLANS
Government has set ambitious goals in the 11th
plan for the power sector owing to which electricity
sector is expected to see some expansions. It has
“POWER FOR ALL” plans by 2012.
The targets have been estimated that need-based
capacity addition of more than 100,000 MW would
be required.
This has resulted in massive additions plans in the
sub sectors of transmission and distribution.
TRANSMISSION
Transmission of electricity is
defined as bulk transfer of power
over a long distance at a high
voltage, generally of 132 KV and
above.
The ministry of power plans to
establish an integrated power grid
by 2012 with close to 200,000 MW
generation capacities and 37,700
MW of inter-regional power
transfer capacity.
DISTRIBUTION
While some progress has been made
in reducing the transmission and
distribution losses, but the ministry
has still to do in order to reduce
them.
Privatization of power sector has
been initiated, either through the
outright privatization or by the
franchisee route.
CHALLENGES
Inability to meet the current demand and capacity
additions plans.
Shortage of coal.
Improperly maintained infrastructure.
Huge power loss in distribution and transmission.
