Tawheed

To know and understand the

importance of Tawheed in
Islam.
Tawheed

Literally Tawheed means to make something one

or to call it one. In English when something is
made one it is deemed to be ‘unified’. However, in
Islamic terminology Tawheed means to believe
that Allah is the one and only God.

Tawheed ar-Rububeeyah
Tawhid ar-Rububeeyah which means, Maintaining the
Unity of Lordship. It is derived from the word “Rab”
which means “Lord”. It means that Allah alone
caused all things to exist when there was nothing; He
sustains and maintains creation without any need
from it or for it; and He is the Sole Lord of the
universe and its inhabitants without any real
challenge to His Sovereignty. This concept can be
found in the Qur’anic verse:
• “Allah created all things and He is the Agent which all thing
depend upon” (Sur’ah 39:62) [Sur’ah az-Zumar]
• “And no clamity strikes except by Allah’s permission” (Sur’ah
64:11) [Sur’ah at-Taghaabun]
Tawhid al-Asmaa wa-Sifaat
Tawhid al-Asmaa wa-Sifaat which means Maintaining the Unity
of Allah’s Names and Attributes. It has five main aspects:
1. For the Unity of Allah’s Names and Attributes to be
maintained in the first aspect, Allah must be referred to
according to how He and His Prophet (PBUH) have
described Him without explaining away His names and
attributes by giving them meanings other than their
obvious meanings. For example, Allah in the Qur’an says
He gets angry with the disbelievers and hypocrites:
“Allah is angry with them, curses them and has prepared for
them an evil end” (Sur’ah al Fat-h)
2. The 2nd aspect involves referring to Allah as He has referred
to Himself without giving Him new names or attributes. For
example, Allah may not be given the name “Al-Ghaadib”
(The Angry One), even though He has said He gets angry
with the disbelievers because neither His
Messengers/Prophets have used this name.

3. The 3rd aspect involves, Allah is referred to without giving
Him the attributed of His creation. For example, in the Bible
it is claimed that Allah spent six days creating the universe
then slept on the seventh. These claims assign God the
attributes of His creation. It is man who tires after heavy
work and needs sleep.
4.The 4th aspect requires than man should not be given the
attributes of Allah. For example, in the New Testament Paul
gives Jesus the divine attribute of having no Beginning or
End.
5. The last aspect involves Maintaining the unity of Allah’s
names in the definite form cannot be given to His creation
unless with added by the prefix “Abd” meaning “Servant
Of”.
Tawheed al’Ibadaah
Tawheed al’Ibadah which means “Maintaining the Unity of
Worship”. This literally means Allah shouldn’t be related to
Idols, Prophets, Saints etc. Allah Himself has related in clear
terms that the “Mushrikoon” (idolaters) of the Prophet’s time
followed the first two aspects of Tawheed. The pagans all
knew that Allah was their Creator, Sustainer, their Lord and
Master yet that did not make them Muslims, as Allah has said:
• “Most of them do not believe in Allah except while joining
partners to Him” (Sur’ah 12:106) [Sur’ah Yoosaf]
• “I did not create the Jinn and Mankind except for My
worship” (Sur’ah 51:56) [Sur’ah adh-Dhaariyaat]
