- JOHN - PRINCETON paul princeton john DRAW A PICTURE
• make a visual representation of what the problem is.
• helps solidify concrete thinking. • is the step between the visual and symbolic language of math. • strategies that many students learn at the earliest stages of math development.
• way to communicate mathematical thinking.
Example 1 • Laura has 3 green chips, 3 blue chips and 1 red chip in her bag. What fractional part of the bag of chips is green? Strategy 1) UNDERSTAND:
What do you need to find?
You need to find how many chips are in all.
Then you need to find how many of the chips are green. 2) PLAN:
How can you solve the problem?
You can draw a picture to show the
information. Then you can use the picture to find the answer. 3) SOLVE:
Draw 7 chips.
3/7 of the chips are green.
Example 2 • Sam has a bag with three green buttons, four blue buttons, and one red button. What fractional part of the bag of buttons is green? 1. Understand: What information does the student need to find? - The student needs to find out how many buttons there are in all, and then find out what fraction of those buttons are green. 2. Devise a Plan: How should we solve the problem? - The student will use the "Draw a Picture" strategy to solve the problem, creating a simple diagram to represent the buttons. 3. Carry out the Plan: Draw a simple picture to represent the information presented in the word problem. - Draw eight circles to represent the eight buttons in the bag. The circles labeled "G" represent the green buttons, the circles labeled "B" represent the blue buttons, and the circles labeled "R" represent the red buttons. The student will see that there are three green buttons out of eight buttons altogether, therefore 3/8 of the buttons are green. 4. Look Back: When looking back on the picture, it is clear to the student that there are three green buttons out of the eight buttons in the bag, or 3/8. Find how many black color of number in rectangle box of the pictures? Solution: • In the picture there are six rectangles, • Total number of yellow color is three • Total number of rose color is one • Total number of blue color is one • Total number of brown color is one Therefore • There is no black color in the pictures. So the result is nil. Answer the question by using Polya’s Method of solving problem 1. Understand the problem 2. Devise a plan 3. Carry out the plan 4. Looking back Question 1 • A carpenter wants to divide a log in 5 equal pieces. How many cuts does he need to make? Question 2 • There are 2 plates of cookies on a table. There are 3 cookies on each plate. How many cookies are there in all? Question 3 • Maimunah has 5 red balloons. Lily has 4 blue balloons. How many balloons do they have in all? Question 4 • Paul Smith had 8 grapes in his lunch box. He ate 5 of them. How many grapes are left? Question 5 • There are 2 shelves in the classroom. Each shelf has 7 books on it. How many books are there in all? Question 6 • A frog is at the bottom of a 10-meter well. Each day he climbs up 3 meters. Each night he slides down 1 meter. On what day will he reach the top of the well and escape?
