With the technological advancements the
storage even advanced for more reliable
and better media for the permanent
storage
The magnetic storage devices are mostly
used but they are more prone to
corruption.
So to avoid that the losses due to
corruption special data is stored in some
other media.

V CD (commonly stands for compact disc) is one
of the oldest and most commonly used optical
media for storage.
V It is generally of a standard size of with 8cm
diameter but a mini-CD is now available with a
lesser diameter and a storage capacity of just
250Mb.
V A normal CD of 12cm diameter has a storage
capacity of 700Mb of data
V DVD (also known as Digital Versatile Disc or Digital
Video Disc) is a popular optical disc storage media
format. Its main uses are video and data storage. Most
DVDs are of the same dimensions as compact discs
(CDs) but store more than six times as much data.
V Variations of the term DVD often describe the way data is
stored on the discs: DVD-ROM has data which can only
be read and not written, DVD-R and DVD+R can only
record data once and then function as a DVD-ROM. DVD-
RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM can both record and erase
data multiple times.

V Blu-ray Disc (also known as Blu-ray or BD) is an optical
disc storage medium. Its main uses are high-definition
video and data storage. The disc has the same physical
dimensions as standard DVDs and CDs.
V The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue laser
(violet-coloured) used to read and write this type of
disc. Because of the beam's shorter wavelength (405
nanometres), substantially more data can be stored on
a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a
red (650 nm) laser. A two-layer Blu-ray Disc can store
50 gigabytes, almost six times the capacity of a two-
layer DVD, or twelve and a half times that of a single-
layer DVD.

V Blu-ray Disc uses a BLUE (technically violet) laser operating at a
wavelength of 405 nm to read and write data. Conventional DVDs
and CDs use red and near infrared lasers at 650 nm and 780 nm
respectively.
V The blue-violet laser's shorter wavelength makes it possible to
store more information on a 12 cm CD/DVD sized disc. The
minimum "spot size" on which a laser can be focused is limited by
diffraction, and depends on the wavelength of the light and the
numerical aperture of the lens used to focus it. By decreasing the
wavelength, increasing the numerical aperture from 0.60 to 0.85
and making the cover layer thinner to avoid unwanted optical
effects, the laser beam can be focused to a smaller spot. This
allows more information to be stored in the same area. For Blu-ray
Disc, the spot size is 580 nm. In addition to the optical
improvements, Blu-ray Discs feature improvements in data
encoding that further increase the capacity

The Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an optical disc
technology that would hold up to 3.9 terabytes (TB) of
information. It employs a technique known as collinear
holography, whereby two lasers, one red and one
green, are collimated in a single beam. The green laser
reads data encoded as laser interference fringes from a
holographic layer near the top of the disc while the red
laser is used as the reference beam and to read servo
information from a regular CD-style aluminium layer
near the bottom. Servo information is used to monitor
the position of the read head over the disc, similar to
the head, track, and sector information on a
conventional hard disk drive. On a CD or DVD this
servo information is interspersed amongst the data
