Operations
When designing your HMI, the lack of an object model in PLCs makes it hard to get all relevant information included in graphical elements and faceplates. The lack of built in information navigation reduces operator efficiency
Graphics
It is hard to create todays top of the line graphics with old graphics technology Old graphical packages make products hard to use and contribute to the poor look of the graphics Reuse of graphics is hard within and between projects
Workplace handling
Creating an efficient operator workplace takes a lot of work (development time) in many products Dual screen workplaces are difficult to set up It is nearly impossible to define window behaviors that allow operators to be efficient
Product package
Many HMI products have a base system and many options, which add cost during project development A great deal of experience is required to set-up a Client-Server environment Creation of functions like faceplates, document access and web integration require additional custom development For a project where controllers are needed, additional cost and effort is required to get engineering tool licenses and perform these installations Windows setup for security etc. requires expert skills Long delivery time (in days) from order to start of development
Engineering
Lots of effort is required to reuse solutions between projects Separate applications for graphics, alarming and history require multiple entries of project data, tag names, limits etc. Synchronization of configuration data such as graphics, documents etc between workplaces requires additional effort
Lacking support of OPC A&E makes time-stamping inaccurate and makes sequence of event analysis hard to carry out
Video
Integration of object oriented video requires advanced custom script coding with complicated engineering for each object
Project documentation
Project documentation is hard to integrate in the HMI products and this documentation is not typically saved in system backups Documentation is not available on all workplaces
