The Contraindicated (Forbidden) Points


The following points have been traditionally considered forbidden to use during the nine months of gestation (pregnancy) with any technique. This is due to their oxytocic effect (ability to induce labor by stimulating contractions of the muscles of the uterus).

LU1 (Lung 1)

Chinese Name: Zhong Fu English Name: Central Palace

Location: Below the acromial extremity of the clavicle, 1


cun directly below Yunmen (LU2), 6 cun lateral to the midline, at the level of the 1st intercostal space.

Precautions: No deep needle toward sternum.

Nature: Front-Mu point of the Lungs.

Functions:

Disperses perverse heat from the chest.

Primary Indications: Cough, asthma, pain in chest. Tertiary Indications: Shoulder & back, fullness in the chest, throat bi, nasal congestion, excessive sweating, neck swellings. Other Indications: Pneumonia, fever in pulmonary disorders with vomiting, insomnia, Yin or Yang (Hot or Cold) disorders of the lungs with cough, sensation of energy rising to upper body, preventing lying down, loss of appetite/vomiting/sensation of abdominal fullness (all these symptoms are secondary to pulmonary disorders), swelling of the four limbs, face swollen due to wind in the lungs, painful skin.

LU2 (Lung 2)

Chinese Name: Yunmen English Name: Cloud Door Location: In the infraclavicular fossa, 6 cun lateral to the midline of the chest. Functions: Disperses fullness from the chest, stimulates the descending of Lung-Qi, stops cough. Indications: Cough, asthma, pain in the chest, shoulder and arm, fullness in the chest.

LU3 (Lung 3)

Chinese Name: Tianfu English Name: Heavenly Residence Location: 3 cun below the anterior axillary fold at the lateral border of the biceps brachii muscle. Indications: Asthma, epistaxis, pain in the medial aspect of the upper arm.

LU4 (Lung 4)

Chinese Name: Xiabai Location: One cun below Tienfu (LU3) at the lateral border of the biceps brachii muscle. Indications: Cough, fullness in the chest, pain in the medial aspect of the upper arm.

LU5 (Lung 5)

Chinese Name: Chize English Name: Cubit Marsh Location: On the cubital crease, on the radial side of the tendon of m. biceps brachii. Locate with the elbow slightly flexed. Nature: He-Sea point of the Lung channel, reducing point of the Lung channel (Mother/Son). Functions: Drains heat in the Lungs, disperses cold from the Lungs, supresses rebellious Qi, pacifies Qi which is contravecting upwards, frees the tendons. Primary Indications: Cough, haemoptysis, asthma, fullness in the chest. Secondary Indications: Tidal fever. Tertiary Indications: Sore throat, elbow & arm spasm & pain, shoulder pain, pleurisy, pulmonary tuberculosis, infantile convulsions. Other Indications: Erysipelas, pneumonia, chest pain, breast abcess, cholera, hemiplegia, quadraplegia, facial nerve paralysis, shangan (cold injury), bi syndrome due to wind, general loss of sensitivity, madness, frequent sneezing, intercostal inflammation, dry mouth, vomiting, abdomen distended & painful, vomiting blood, pain in the kdineys, urinary frequency, atony of the bladder, contractures & muscular spasms, stiffness of vertebral column.

LU6 (Lung 6)

Chinese Name: Kong Zui English Name: Convergence Hole; Extreme Hole; Opening Maximum; Location: On the palmar aspect of the forearm, on the line joining Taiyuan (LU9) and Chize (LU5), 7 cun above Taiyuan (LU9). Nature: Xi-Cleft Point of the Lung channel. Functions: For acute obstruction or pain in the Lung channel or Lung organ, needle in acute crisis (Giov), for problems associated with stoppage of the circulation og Lung Qi (NVN), regulates & suppresses rebellious Lung Qi (Sh), regulates Lung Qi & makes it descend (Giov), cools heat & stops bleeding (Sh), eliminates heat in the Lung & stops bleeding (Giov), stops pain (Giov) Primary Indications: Cough, haemoptysis. Tertiary Indications: Asthma, sore throat, elbow & arm spasm & pain, haemorrhoids, headache, fever without sweating. Other Indications: Pneumonia, belching, vomiting blood.

LU7 (Lung 7)

Chinese Name: Lie Que English Name: Branching Cleft; Broken Sequence. Location: Proximal to the styloid process of the radius, in a small hollow 1.5 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist. Nature: Master/Key/Confluent Point of Renmai (often coupled with Zhaohai (KI6); when needled with Zhaohai (KI6): Tonifies Yin, soothes the throat & activates the Lungs descending function. Functions: Clears and regulates Renmai, special regional actions on nape of neck and head: "To nape & head Lieque is wed" from the Ming Dynasty song "Four Dominant Points Song", opens up the Lungs, strengthens the dispersing function of the Lungs, disperses Wind, expels Wind-Cold, invigorates the Jing-Luo. Primary Indications: Cough. Secondary Indications: Sore throat, facial paralysis, headache. Tertiary Indications: Neck Stiffness, trismus, toothache, wrist weakness, hemiplegia, haematuria, asthma, acute oedema of the limbs, hot palms - heat in palm of hand, trigeminal neuralgia. Other Indications: Urticaria (wind rash), facial spasms, radial neuralgia, urinary frequency, pain in the elbow, malaria, chills in the back, lack of energy, cadaveric syncope with four limbs icy, epilepsy, laughing/raving/visions, insensitivity of the whole body due to bi syndrome or wind, phlegm obstructing the throat, vomiting of phlegm, spermatorrhoea, pain in the penis, swelling of the shoulders, rheumatism of the shoulders, sensation of heat with sweating on chest & back, sensation of cold in chest & back.

LU8 (Lung 8)

Chinese Name: Jing Qu English Name: Channel Canal Location: One cun above the transverse crease of the wrist (Taiyan LU9) on the lateral border of the radial artery. Nature:River point, Metal point. Indications: Cough, asthma, fever, pain in the chest, sore throat, pain in the wrist.

LU9 (Lung 9)

Chinese Name: Tai Yuan English Name: Great Abyss Location: At the transverse crease of the wrist, in the depression on the radial side of the radial artery Nature: Shu-Stream of the Lung channel, Yuan-Source point of the Lung channel, reinforcing point of the Lung channel (Mother/Son). Functions: One of the Bahui (Eight Meetings) for the Mai (vessels), eliminates Wind, transforms Phlegm, resolves Lung Phlegm, regulates the Lungs, strengthens the Lungs, strengthens the Lung function, stops coughing, for longterm problems, or all disorders of Qi. Primary Indications: Haemoptysis, cough, asthma. Secondary Indications: Sore throat. Tertiary Indications: Chest pain, wrist pain, headache, forearm pain, eye disorders, vomiting blood, insomnia. Other Indications: Influenza, pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, toothache, energy rising in the body, sudden chills & fever, deviation of mouth, divagation, dry throat, great thirst with dry throat, incontinence of stools, stenosis of the oesophagus, rough pulse, palms of hands very hot, pain in shoulders & back with sensation of cold, pain in shoulder girdle, pain in elbow.

LU10 (Lung 10)

Chinese Name: Yuji English Name: Fish Border Location: On the radial aspect of the midpoint of the first metacarpal bone, on the junction of the red and white skin (ie: the junction of the dorsum and palm of the hand) Nature: Ying-Spring point of the Lung channel. Functions: Cools heat in the Lungs, benefits the throat, eases the throat Primary Indications: Cough, haemoptysis. Secondary Indications: Sore throat. Tertiary Indications: Loss of voice, fever, dyspnoea/asthma, pain in chest & back, abdominal pain, irritability. Other Indications: Syncope, infantile malnutrition syndrome, all disorders due to alcoholism, fear of wind, chills, headache, eye-dizziness, yellow tongue, patient cannot eat, vomiting blood, rheumatism of the elbow; cannot extend the arm, swelling of the limbs, swelling of the chin, wandering bi, abcess of the nipple.

LU11 (Lung 11)

Chinese Name: Shao Shang English Name: Lesser Merchant Location: On the radial side of the thumb, about 0.1 cun posterior to the corner of the nail. Nature: Jing-Well point of the Lung channel, 2nd of the 13 Ghost points. Functions: Cools the Lungs, eliminates Wind-Heat, creates sweating in heat disorders, powerful effects in lowering fever, benefits the pharynx, special point for the throat, revives from fainting, in treating mental illness or epistaxis, apply moxibustion with 3-5 small moxa cones. Primary Indications: Cough. Secondary Indications: Sore throat, syncope. Tertiary Indications: Epistaxis, fever, psychosis, spasms/pain in fingers, throat bi, mumps, asthma. Other Indications: Common cold, pneumonia, infantile indigestion, enteritis, infantile epilepsy, lips always dry, fullness below the heart with abundant swelling, abdominal distension, bleeding from the mouth, swelling of the chin with trismus, frequent hiccough, tinnitus due to emptiness of ancestral Qi.

PC1 (Pericard ium 1)

Chinese Name: Tianchi English Name: Heavenly Pond Location: In the fourth intercostal space, 1 cun lateral to the nipple and 5 cun lateral to the anterior midline. Functions: Meeting Point of Terminal Yin (Pericardium and Liver) Indications: Suffocating sensation in the chest, pain in the hypochondriac region, swelling and pain of the axillary region.

PC2 (Pericard ium 2)

Chinese Name: Tiangguan Location: 2 cun below the level of the anterior axillary fold, between the two heads of the biceps brachii muscle Indications:Cardiac pain, distension of the hypochondriac region, cough, pain in the chest, back and the medial aspect of the arm.

PC3 (Pericard ium 3)

Chinese Name: Quze English Name: Crooked Marsh Location: On the transverse cubital crease, at the ulnar side of the tendon of m. biceps brachii. Nature: He-Sea point of the Pericardium channel Functions: He-Sea point of the Pericardium channel, opens up the Heart Qi, drains heat from the blood, THE point to remove heat from the blood, regulates the intestines, adjusts the intestines, stops vomiting and diarrhea Primary Indications: Cardiac pain, palpitations, agitation, tremor of hand & arm. Tertiary Indications: Fever, dry mouth, gastric pain, pain in elbow & arm, bronchitis, heat exhaustion, diarrhoea with vomiting. Other Indications: Urticaria, morning sickness, pulmonary tuberculosis, sadness, perspiration on head and neck, severe tonsillitis, hemiplegia.

PC4 (Pericard ium 4)

Chinese Name: Ximen English Name: Accumulation Door; Crevice Door Location: 5 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist, on the line connecting Quze (PC3) and Daling (PC7), between the tendons of m. palmaris longus and m. flexor carpi radialis. Nature: Xi-Cleft point of the Pericardium channel Functions:Pacifies the Heart and calms the spirit, tranquillizes the Heart, calms the mind, regulates the Qi and expands the diaphragm, opens the chest, special point for angina pectoris, ximen becomes painful in pleurisy and palpitations. Primary Indications: Cardiac pain, palpitations, haematemesis. Tertiary Indications: Epistaxis, furuncle, depressive psychosis, cough haemoptysis, haemorrhoids. Other Indications: Mastitis, spasm of diaphragm, wrist joint pain, lack of energy.

PC5 (Pericard ium 5)

Chinese Name: Jianshi English Name: Acts as intermediary Location: 3 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist between the tendons of m. palmaris longus and m. flexor carpi radialis Nature: Jing-River point of the Pericardium channel Functions: Calms the spirit/mind, harmonizes the Stomach, promotes stomach function, eliminates/resolves phlegm, dispels fullness in chest, clears internal heat, stops pain in the chest, special action in relieving bone stuck in throat, special point for malaria. Primary Indications: Cardiac pain, vomiting, psychosis, palpitations, swelling of the axilla, elbow contracture. Secondary Indications: Malaria. Tertiary Indications: Gastric pain, febrile diseases, agitation, epilepsy, arm pain, irregular menstruation, uterine congestion/endometritis, throat obstruction. Other Indications: Coma, yellow eyes, generalized scabies, palms of hands very hot, parasitosis, wasting disease in infants with parasitosis and malnutrition, fear of wind and cold, shivering, yin disease, stifling, lack of energy, sudden muteness, aphonia, cholera with nausea but no vomiting.

PC6 (Pericard ium 6)


Chinese Name: Neiguan English Name: Inner Gate Location: 2 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist, between the tendons of m. palmaris longus and m. flexor carpi radialis. Nature: Luo-Connecting point of the Pericardium channel, Master/Key/Confluent point of Yinweimai (often coupled with Gongsun SP4) Functions: Calms the Heart and the spirit, calms the mind, regulates the Qi, regulates the Heart Qi, suppresses pain, "For chest & ribs (sides) use Neiguan" (Ming Dynasty poem), special effects on diseases of chest and abdomen, generally used for cardiovascular, digestive and mental problems, special point for all disorders of the stomach, gall bladder, spleen and heart, regulates the middle jiao, research: causes vasoconstriction. Primary Indications: Cardiac pain, palpitations, epilepsy, vomiting, contracture and pain of elbow and arm. Secondary Indications: Malaria, febrile diseases. Tertiary Indications: Gastric pain, psychosis, chest pain and fullness, hiccough, wind-stroke, jaundice, post partum vertigo/syncope, dyspnoea/asthma Other Indications: Shock, migraine headache, hyperthyroidism, swollen and painful throat, pain asociated with surgery, diseases of the chest, disharmony between the stomach and spleen, prolapsed rectum, rheumatic heart disease, cardioaesthenia, stomatitis, placenta does not descend, inflammation of the eyes, congestiong of blood in eyes.

PC7 (Pericard ium 7)


Chinese Name: Daling English Name: Big Mound; Big Tomb, also known as Guixin (Ghost Heart). Location: In the depression in the middle of the transverse crease of the wrist, between the tendons of m. palmaris longus and m. flexor carpi radialis. Nature: Shu-Stream point of the Pericardium channel, Yuan-Source point of the Pericardium channel, 4th of the 13 Ghost points. Functions: Clears the Heart and calms the spirit, reduces fire from heart, calms the mind, main point to treat insomnia, harmonizes/Pacifies the Stomach, expands the chest, dispels fullness from the chest, reducing (dispersion) point of the Pericardium channel. Primary Indications: Cardiac pain, vomiting/haematemesis, palpitations, psychosis. Tertiary Indications: Gastric pain, epilepsy, pain in chest and sides, panic/fear, insomnia, tonsillitis, swelling of the axilla, skin disorders, bad breath, arm pain. Other Indications: Diseases and pain of wrist joint, pain at the root of the tongue, neuraesthenia, lack of energy, constipation, cholera imperception of fingers, headache, fever without sweating and with headache, inflammation of eyes, yellow sclera, dry mouth, urine red like blood, palms of hands very hot, swelling of muscles in the renal region

PC8 (Pericard ium 8)


Chinese Name: Laogong English Name: Palace of Labour Location: On the palm of the hand, between the 2nd and 3rd metacarpals, proximal to the metacarpophlangeal joints. Some texts place Laogong between the 3rd and 4th metacarpals (i.e: on the ulnar side of the 3rd metacarpal, rather than the radial side). Nature: Ying-Spring point of the Pericardium channel, 9th of the 13 Ghost points. Functions: Cools the Heart and drains heat. Primary Indications: Cardiac pain, epilepsy. Secondary Indications: Mouth ulcers. Tertiary Indications: Bad breath, psychosis, vomiting, skin rashes, numb fingers, jaundice, dysphagia, syncope, epistaxis, diabetes. Other Indications: Hand tremors, writers cramp, wind with bi syndrome in the hand and groaning, excessive sweating of the palms, pleurisy, fullness and pain in the sides of the chest, pain in the sides preventing turning around, spasms of the diaphragm, sensations of Qi rising, hypertension, ateriosclerosis, gastric cancer, bronchitis, haematuria, blood in the stools, haemorrhoids, hot or cold abcesses, headache, migraine, fever without sweating after cold has been trapped for a few days, wasting disease in infants with malnutrition and parasitosis.

PC9 (Pericard ium 9)

Chinese Name: Zhongchong English Name: Middle Pouring; Middle Assault Location: In the centre of the tip of the middle finger, or alternative location about 1 fen from the base of the middle fingernail on the radial side. Nature: Jing-Well point of the Pericardium channel. Functions: Reinforcing (Tonification) point of the Pericardium channel, bleed in emergency. Primary Indications: Cardiac pain. Tertiary Indications: Irritability, syncope, tinnitus, tongue stiffness, febrile diseases, heat stroke, palms hot. Other Indications: Infantile convulsions, infantile night crying, infantile parasitosis, mental disorder, vertigo, acute disorders due to perverse wind.

The Heart Channel of Hand Shaoyin (Lesser Yin)

HT1 (Heart 1)
Chinese Name: Jiquan English Name: Extreme Spring Location: In the centre of the axilla, on the medial side of the axillary artery. Locate with the arm raised. Primary Indications: Cardiac pain, pain in ribs/sides. Tertiary Indications: Dry retching, thirst, scrofula, elbow & arm cold & painful, shoulder joint restriction, jaundice. Other Indications: Depression, groaning, paralysis of four limbs, insensitivity of the four limbs, stench in the axilla.

HT2 (Heart 2)

Chinese Name: Qingling Indications:Pain in the cardiac and hypochondriac regions, shoulder and arm. Location: When the elbow is flexed, the point is 3 cun above the medial end of the transverse cubital crease (Shaohai HT3), in the groove medial to the m. biceps brachii.

HT3 (Heart 3)

Chinese Name: Shaohai English Name: Lesser Sea; Shaoyin Sea Location: When the elbow is flexed, this point is at the medial end of the transverse cubital crease, in the depression anterior to the medial epicondyle of the humerus. Nature: He-Sea point of the Heart channel. Functions: Calms the Shen, regulates the Heart Qi, clears the vessels, invigorates the collaterals, relaxes the tendons, special point for scrofula. Primary Indications: Cardiac pain, arm numbness, hand tremor, elbow contracture. Secondary Indications: Scrofula. Tertiary Indications: Pain in axilla & sides, headache, psychosis, memory loss, dizziness, stiff neck, toothache, vomiting, debility of the limbs. Other Indications: Cold fingers, ulnar nerve neuralgia, neuraesthenia, epilepsy - bleats like a lamb, hiccoughs, fever with chills, sensation of energy rising to the upper body, swelling of arm & forearm.

HT4 (Heart 4)
Chinese Name: English Name: Mind Path

Location: When the palm faces upward, the point is on the radial side of the tendon of m. flexor carpi ulnaris, 1.5 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist. Nature: River Point, Metal Point Functions: Removes obstructions from the channel. Indications: Cardiac pain, spasmodic pain of the elbow and arm, sudden loss of voice.

HT5 (Heart 5)
