INTRODUCTION TO PREPOSITIONS

Prepositions are words that specify place direction and time. A preposition links nouns ,pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. A preposition usually indicates the temporal , spatial and logical relationships of its object to the rest of its sentence. NOTE THAT.

The prepositions vAre placed before nouns or pronouns vGive us information regarding location , time and direction.

TYPES OF PREPOSITONS

There are three types of prepositions:-

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE
Words that refer to place and positions are known as prepositions of place or location.It is also known as prepositions of spatial relationship. Examples: The monkey is sitting beside the tree. The piglet is hiding behind the tree. The bird is in the hole. The monkey is sitting on the bark of tree. The hen is sitting in front of the tree. The bird is flying over the apple.

PREPOSITIONS OF TIME
Prepositions that refer to time of an action or a state of being are called prepositions of time. In English as in Spanish prepositions of time are used to indicate when an action happens and how much it last. Examples: See you at 1:30. She has been waiting for you since morning. The programme will start within an hour. I must reach there by 6:00pm this evening. My birthday is in June. I reached the station before the train left.

PREPOSITIONS OF DIRECTION
Words that refer to the direction/movement are called prepositions of direction. Examples: I poured some milk into the glass. The flight is flying across the sea. The man is climbing towards the terrace. We walk through the forest to reach the river. Throw waste into the bin.

PLACEMENT OF PREPOSITIONS

Though prepositions are usually placed before a noun/pronoun,sometimes they may be placed after the words they modify. In that case prepositions always comes at the end-

When its object is the relative pronoun that; as: 1.Here is the pen that you were looking for. Whenever this relative pronoun is omitted; as: 1.This is the book I was talking of. When the object is an interrogative pronoun or adverb; as: 1.Whom are you looking for? When a preposition is used with an infinitive; as: 1.A knife is to cut with.

PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES

There are groups of words each of which has one or two prepositions as its part.Besides,the group has the collective force of a single prepositions.Such group of words are called prepositional phrases.

Here are some of the prepositional phrases and their use: 1.at home in - good at Mohan is quite at home in Maths. 2.at the top of at the upper limit The shepherd at the top of his voice for help. 3.by dint of by force of He stood first by dint of hardwork. 4.in the guise of disguised as The king roamed at night in the guise of a poor man. 5.in regard to about What are your views in regard to slavery?
