PROGRAM ON SELF DEVELOPMENT

The need for exploration of the Self : The Industrial revolution of the earlier era apart from economic growth, materialistic benefits etc, has perfected Management concepts, while the Technological revolutuion of the present era (Leading to information explosion), has a new dimension to the Management, ie management of the self. On oneside, it is the Technology, which decides the competitiveness of the product and ensures its successful stay in the market, while on the other side the same technology creates a tremondous pressure on the Individual forcing him to enter into continuous learning and creative mode, requiring superhuman efforts to develop himself in different fields without physical brakdown. The Technology stance: The individual in his work situation or involved in worldly activities is really not always clear of the role he needs to play towards Technology. Where his stance towards Technology need to be only appreciative he takes extra pains to go into fundamentals as against another who needs to absorb Technology, is totally found wanting for even managing (adopting!)Technology(inspite of extensive Training),due to his poor self development and lack of exposure to management concepts. You are a Product of your own thinking: Awareness of the working of the mind and its relationship with the world helps one to reorganise oneself for a positive thinking and towards this a little exposure to the ancient Indian wisdom, involving Vedic Management Concepts will help in positioning/relating the self correctly with the worldly activities.

The dimensional aspects while representing the self:The simpler

way of individual representation was adopted by the ancient Buddhist in two dimensinal form,as a wheel of life showing the individuals body, emotional and intelluctual needs as different segments in the wheel and the wheel keeps on revolving representing his continuous worldly engagements.(Refer wheel of life slide). However the scientific view which is closer to the Vedic Management is thro (focussed) thoughts several influencing spheres are created around the self and when well balanced like the planetary system (Refer planetory system slide)exerts the necessary force for the successful completion of worldly activities by the Self which is in the centre of the system. Like the gravitational forces of the planetory system exerting influence on each other ( at the same time keep an orbital distance to avoid collision), we are also part of Nature and the rules of Macro cosm applies to the self also.A search inwards after gaining control of the sheath of layers of the self leads you to successful worldly management. The seven layers as envisaged by the Vedic Managers consist of the first layer which is the Body followed by Prana or breath, Mind, Intellect, Memory, Ego or Ahambavam, all of them enclosing the Supreme Self or Atman. The Prasna Upanishad calls them as Pancha Koshas involving Annamaya (Body),Pranamaya (the vital body or Prana),Manomaya (the memory and the mind),Vijnana maya(the Intellect and the ego) and Ananda maya (the supreme self or Atman). It also says that thro thought the movement of Prana in the body can be controlled.

KNOW YOUR SELF

THE KNOWLEDGE OF SELF The individuals awareness that the individual self exist in different layers, while undergoing the worldly activities, going through the rotations of wheel of life ( for details refer fig on wheel of life) , helps him to position himself in the right layer of the self, for planning /executing a task or series of tasks connected with his Goal . These layers are listed below. 1.THE LOWER SELF 2.THE NORMAL OR WORLDLY SELF 3.THE SUPERIOR SELF

The Lower self

This is the self which identifies with the bodily needs like hunger, thirst and other base instincts (including sex) connected with the body and repeats in a cycle. The mind also under the influence of emotions like anger, fear, lust etc, is totally under the control of the lower self and these base instincts and emotions, when kept under check or kept under moderation, the individual achieves a high degree of concentration /attention of the mind for planning and execution of the task. The lower self is somewhat comparable to the Thamasic mind ( Thamasic is a Sanskrit word and the early Indian Philosophers defined such a state of mind as Thamas ), meaning that the individuals actions are influenced by the baser sensual needs and emotions. The nearby equivalent is the Child State referred to by the modern TA practitioners/Psychologists of today.

The Normal balanced self

This is the higher layer of the self which has successfully balanced the bodily needs and the needs of the mind and is goal oriented, but is still affected by the negative results when things goes wrong and takes time to recover from the action/reaction cycle of the mind .This state of mind is comparable to the Rajasic mind as defined by the early Indian philosophers/Vedic Managers. The scientific TA defines it as the Adult state of Mind. This mind when well developed plays the various roles successfully as envisaged in worldly management as a family person as Manager of Organisation,Technology etc.

The Superior self:

This is the advanced state of the self capable of viewing the transaction as though it is happening to others and thereby insulating itself from the effects of the lower transactions of the body and mind. It is capable of going thro Planning/Execution and all other elements listed in the wheel of life, in clock like precision and to perfection.Though it appears like a silent onlooker, it has the capacity to guide the other layers of the Self and this requires training . The ancient Indian wisdom defines this state of the mind as Satwic, and the near equivalent state defined by the present TA scientists is the Parent state.

AIM OF SELF DEVELOPMENT

The aim of this Self development training program is to condition these lower layers of the self to allow the Superior self to take control of the situation in driving the wheel of life, whenever there is turbulence in the rotation/movement in the wheel of life without fear which is the root cause of failure. An ideal practitioner continuously meditates on the Management aspects including Self Management and plans and executes going through motions as depicted in the wheel of life, controlled by the right layers of the self, and skillfully handles the transactions of life and ensures the motion of wheel of life unperturbed by emotions like fear, anxiety etc, which are the root cause for falures. It is a CATS walk: Look at the cats confidence in the figure. It requires a trainer to condition the cat for such a response. It is normal for the cat to avoid confrontation even with a single dog and that is its (Thamasic response) nature. If a cat can overcome its destructive emotions like fear, anxiety, anger etc with your efforts of training, cant we do it to ourself. Please introspect and you will find both the winner and loser is in you.

VEDIC MANAGEMENT
The concepts taught in Vedic Management are essentially derived from the Vedas,Upanishads and the Geetha.
The balancing forces: Look at the planetory sytem shown below .They obey the law of Nature and gravitational forces are so well balanced that they maintain their orbital distance as well continuously move. The vedic management believes that we are also part of this Nature and the principles of Macro cosmic forces also applies to us.

Vedic Management

The concepts taught in Vedic Management are essentially derived from the Vedas,Upanishads and the Geetha. In india there is an Institute of VedicManagement and is patronised by the Corporates, who take the students in their Organisation after completion of the course. The students are taught how to face the world. Stress management, Work ethics, Science of productivity, Value systems, leadership etc are better understood thro vedic management workshops and case studies, than conventional management courses. They view life as the one divided between the individual and world. Acquisition of knowledge is very essential for good living and the knowledge of the self is as much essential as the knowledge of the world. On one side we see an active, highly dynamic, productive and prosperous western world, while the rest of the world may be termed as passive but relatively peaceful and happy though less productive and prosperous. With the rate of divorce touching almost 70% and high crime rates etc, the family life which is the sheet anchor for the child development has been a total disaster in the western world. The students coming out of this course do not fear for anything and if they stay out without the offer of work or remain inactive for sometime also they are courageous and such disposition come on its own accord.

The need for Self Management 1.High performing quality life : On the oneside it gives the individual an inner
awakening, which helps him to lead a better quality life, on the otherside from the National perspective, it is a great contribution to the National Economy, by way of improved performance of individual/groups of individuals involved in sectors/organisations that are directly/indirectly linked to improving economy.Going by the statistics of average efficiency in these sectors which is in the region of 60 to70%, every effort to improve the individual performance will have a salutory effect in the competitive Global economy.

2.Stress free life : The uncontrolled emotions,When not under check they develop
stress resulting in various disorders. Panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and other psychological disorders (Psychosomatic) are the result of poor stress management/ uncontrolled emotions. Though the saying is that the fittest survives better, it is not to be mistaken as that the person should be muscular and strong physically. The cockroach has survived through millions of years not because of its physical strength but by its ability to adjust to its environment. 3.Good manager of relationship: Every achievement is the result of good management and a good manager manages his relationship well ,which is the foundation for success in worldly management. The different managerial roles the individual has to play including the manager of the self is depicted in the next slide as another wheel and you may see that like the automobile in motion the bigger wheel of life driving the other wheels .

Planning &Executional Aspects in wheel of life

Good Planning ensures successful Execution:
You always find successful people stating that they always imagine (Day dream) the various sequences of events that lead to achieving their Goal, and this is nothing but a methodology in planning known as Conceptualisation of the plan. Actually these successful persons , in their free time , have meditated upon these managerial concepts included in the wheel of life, unhindered by other (unconnected) thoughts/emotions. Such a mind under the control of the superior self creates new concepts/ideas and improves upon its own plan and remains for ever competitive. Thiruvalluvar the Saint Philosopher from South India (Tamil Nadu), and an accomplished Self Manager, has the following thing to say in his Thirukkural, emphasising the importance of Planning before execution, and criticises rethinking about jobplans at the time of execution. -Enni thunika karumam, thunintha pin ennuvam enbathu ezukku.

Understanding the Planning Methodlogy

Planning is a Management process : Planning may be
also defined as an organised method of conceptualising and documenting the various events/activities in a logical sequence and the execution of these planned activities, leads you to achieving your goal and it is a continuous process.

Plans may be long or short term: Depending on the

goals which maybe farsighted (like an individual may dream of setting up an IT consultation Institute though he may be doing his graduation only in the field of IT) or immediate (wanting to go to library for preparing an article in IT), the plans will be known as short term or long term plans.

Master Plan and Detail plan: While the plan at the macro
level covering the broad spectrum of all activities may be termed as Master Plan, for proper execution the detailed activities have to be also planned and they can be further broken down to Annual,Quarterly, weekly and daily plans for easy execution.
