Learning objectives
At the end of this topic, you will be able to:

 Know the function of light in 3ds Studio Max correctly.


 State 4 types of light and its function correctly.
 Modify light parameter in 3ds Studio Max correctly.
 Apply light into a 3d environment scene correctly.
Lights
 Function : Lights are used to give light to a scene and
enhance the visibility and realism of the scene and object.

 If we render a scene that we have not placed any lights, 3ds


Studio Max uses its own default lighting.

 As soon as we place a light in a scene, default lighting is turn


off automatically.

 “The key to a realistic scene lies in its lighting”

Types of light list


Types of lighting
 There are about 4 main light types in 3ds Studio Max that is:

1. Omni
 Radiates light equally in all directions, like a lightbulb.

 Useful for lighting a scene with no necessary direction


for the light source.

 Directional
 Cast parallel light rays, thus its usually used to simulate
the sun.
 It can cast shadows and project bitmap images.
 Divide into target direct and free direct.
Types of lighting
1. Spotlight
1. Cast a focus light similar to a flash light, teater spot, or
automobile headlight.
2. It can cast shadows and project bitmap images
3. There are two types, target sportlight and free sportlight.

2. Skylight
1. Also known as ambient light.
2. It simulates background light or light that reflects from
objects.
3. Can be used to increase or decrease the overall lighting of a
scene.

Modify Light
 To modify light just use select and move tool, rotate tool and
transform tool in tool bar menu.

 It enables light to be rotated, move and position in the new


place or location.

 Further modification for light can be made through modify


parameter.
Light parameter
 Lights also can cast shadows of our object. The shadows
function can be available by turn on shadow functions in light
parameters.

Conclusion
 Lights are used to give light to a scene and enhance the
visibility and realism of the scene and object.

 Four types of lights is omni, skylight, directional and


spotlight.

 Light effect can be changed through modification at modify


parameter.
