CASE STUDY

TATA NANO
A people's car, let down by the people

MR. Ratan Tata chairman of Tata group who in year 2003 dreamt of producing a safe affordable car for the common man After the wait for 5 years crossing all financial and technological barriers he kept his promise and unveiled Tata Nano on

10th january 2007 at the 9th auto expo2008 in new Delhi

y

Tata Nano cool and smat, launched by tata motors is worlds cheapest car

TARGET MARKET
The low cost car is clearly intended for the masses. y The 2wheeler segment y For the family of four that would otherwise ride on a scooter y It also attracts small cars buyers like Maruti 800
y

Marketing strategy
Sales start in July 2009 and the first one lakh allottees are selected through a lottery y Given the price restrictions bracket and restricted engineering challenges, it was nothing short of a masterpiece. y Every Nano produced finds homes in many corners of the country y First owners become superstars, getting more eyeballs from onlookers y Small promotions from mass media
y

BAD LUCK STIKES

y

About 7-8 Nanos catch fire in these periods till today Press not only in India, but globally now begins to question its safety Even question Tata motors safety record by saying, "safety need not necessarily come CHEAP."

Negative publicity spreads across the country Tata motors now realize that they can no longer bite off more than they can chew An investigation is ordered and given all clear after a couple of minor niggles sorted out. As soon as the new plant goes into operation built in a record 14 months, sales skyrocket to a consistent 8-9000 level for about 3-4 months

y y

Then the inevitable happens. News of fire again reverberates around the industry and Nano sales start to skid to 50006000 odd level, as a result of perception Then another disaster strikes. The Nano gets not one, but two price hikes as high cost of raw materials and rising input costs are proving to be too good to be true

y y

THE PROBLEM
Out of the 2,03,000 Nanos booked only 70,000 were delivered. y And then sales drop down to just 3,024 in October y Dealers are having huge stocks of Nanos now started giving free accessories to move out the car y Then comes the final nail in the coffin-the graph just drops to 509 in November
y

WHAT WENT WRONG

What led to this overall decline? Any one of the 4-5 causes that we have tried to analyze or something else? y What can be done to identify the root cause of the problem. y What as the exact cause of the problem? y What can be our observations ? y Possible solutions that can be emerged from this situational analysis that have put forward.
y

SOLUTIONS
Tata has gone wrong with the marketing strategy y The image of the car has let it down y The news of the fires would not have helped it cause. y The media has been instrumental in belittling the car since its launch.
y

The average family is also very cautious about their image in their respective societies The target market which the Nano was aimed at has practically rejected it. The Nano has lost it because of its "too cheap" image which turned out to be a negative point for it rather than a + point. Nano has flopped period , Not because it is a bad car but because of the image that it portrays

Most of the Nano owners out there known, owns the same as their secondary car. Most of them use these cars to go office daily, or made as a present to his/her son/daughter on their b'day So I seriously feel that the target customers have changed. For the above set of customers, safety matters a lot at whatever cost.

STRATEGIES BY TATA
Tatas have worked upon the marketing strategy y More Tv advertisements of the small wonder y 4 years warranty or 60,000km scheme is been launched y Tata motors makes an official statement of some additional design modifications that have been done to make the Nano more safer than before
y

The factory opened in June for the Nano production has a capacity of producing 250,000 cars a year y Tata Nano Official Advertisement with subtitles.flv
y y

There was a 31 percent rise in the total vehicle sales of Tata Motors. The fuel prices are rising up day by day so many 2wheeler as well as fourwheeler segment people are attracted towards the fuel efficient Small wonder Tata Motors has managed a turnaround in sales of Nano posting an impressive number of 5,784 units in December 2010

NANO DIESEL
Heard by reports that the Tata Nano diesel is being tested by Tata Motors now. No official confirmation yet y There is going to be a diesel Nano first, then a Nano automatic, then a CNG Nano followed by an air-powered Nano y What heard so far is that the diesel Tata Nano would be launched in mid 2011
y

Rs 2 lakh is the estimated Tata Nano diesel price y By the launch date, the customers also would have got used to seeing Nano cars around, and would have a clear idea about the features, power and practicality of the car.
