INTRODUCTION
Paper is an indispensible material in our daily lives. It is impossible to quote an activity without the use of paper. The uses of paper are innumerous but its synthesis, consumption and disposal pose threats to environment . Many alternatives were proposed to tackle with the problem of paper production. In the recent era, mobiles and electronic media are playing a admirable role in reducing paper usage .In this report, we present the environmental problems due to paper usage and effective role of mobiles to overcome this problem.

As it exists today, the paper-making industry primarily depends upon virgin wood-based fibers to make the pulp that becomes sheets of paper. Much of the wood used comes from old growth and environmentally sensitive forests in all parts of the world .Paper and pulp industry is very energy and resource intensive. It is the third largest consumer of industrial water and fourth largest emitter of industrial greenhouse gases. It releases about 212 million tons of hazardous substances into air and water.

PAPER PRODUCTION

Problems in production
Unsustainable logging is followed in most of the areas. Rather than truly restoring the native forest, the companies usually create monoculture plantations , diminishing the diversity that once existed. This type of plantation cannot support the plants and animals that once lived in the native forest, and doesnt represent a true restoration of what was lost. Various hazardous emissions and wastes are produced.

PAPER FACTS

Paper is the number one material that is thrown away. For every 100 pounds of trash we throw away,35 pounds is paper. Paper fills up 30-40% of American landfill space. Americans use 50 tons of paper each year damaging 850 million trees. Each year world produces more than 300million tons of paper. U.S annually consumes 4 million tons of copy paper,2 billion books,350 million magazines and 25 billion newspapers. U.S households receive 90billion pieces of commercial junk mails every year. Paper comprises of 40 percent if U.S. solid municipal waste.

MOBILE UTILITY SERVICES

Letters were used for distant communication in the olden days. With the advent of mobiles, communication turned easier. So the custom of writing letters slowly vanished. Various means of travel services offer the facility of booking tickets online which can be accessed on mobile. We get e-bills of our transactions and payments to our mobiles. Paper usage in offices can be greatly reduced with prompt mobile services. Commercial reports can be shared through mobiles. Important messages being faxed can be sent as messages on mobile. We can get news subscription on our mobiles which drastically reduces the burden for paper production. We can get the opportunity to read books and novels, access to information through internet services on mobiles. Data transfer takes place without the use of papers with the use of messages and other utility services on mobiles. Use of paper calendars also reduced as we get calendar services on mobile .Dairy usage is also reduced as we can make important notes and save contacts and addresses. We can use mail and sms services. As it is erasable memory, we have lot of scope to store various data. Instead of using posters and pamphlets for advertising, digital advertisements can be promoted through mobiles.

Now let us analyze the areas in which we have to enhance the mobile usage which will definitely reduce the paper consumption

CASE STUDIES
I.NEWSPAPER USAGE IN LH,NITW: Daily the total number of subscribers of news paper in ladies hostel this year is:70 Let us suppose average weight of newspaper is 25 gms. The amount of paper that is being used is (per day): 1.75k.g The amount of paper that is being used annually is: 638.75 k.g II .MESS CARDS IN THE FOOD COURT:. In food court every month around 1200 mess cards are being issued. III. PUBLICITY POSTERS FOR EVENTS IN COLLEGE CLUBS: There are 10 clubs in NITW campus. Every club organizes 1 or 2 events every month and for each event atleast 30 posters are required for publicity. So on an average 500 posters are required in the college per month. In a semester, we require about 2000 papers alone for publicity. In an academic year, 10,000 papers are required for publicity including other notices of the college events and circulars.

IV. PAPER USAGE IN XEROX SHOP IN THE CAMPUS:

We have two Xerox centres in our campus, LAKSHMI SAI and UMA Xerox. Every week,20 packets of paper are used. Each packet has 500 papers weighing 2kg. Every week,10,000 papers are being used. From these figures, we can estimate the amount of paper used alone for Xerox purposes. For making a ton of paper, about 17 trees are cut down. So, using the Xerox on a large scale also contributes to the increasing deforestation.

Though mobiles play a pro-active role in reducing paper production and consumption, its usage has some limitations. Mobile usage is costlier compared to paper. Sociological and psychological impact. Mobile usage causes health disorders. They are distractive. Emits harmful radio waves. Generate lot of e-waste.

LIMITATIONS OF MOBILE PHONES

conclusion
Thus in overall sense mobile phones can effectively replace paper. Try to replace paper with mobiles as possible as we can in proper and judicious way so that we as students can become part of eco-friendly measures to conserve environment.
