Global Funding Gap

$26 billion needed in 2010 to effectively fight AIDS, from all sources Wealthy countries only contributed $15.9 billion Those same countries promised to contribute the resources to achieve universal access by 2010 - this year! Where is the other $10 billion they promised?

Examples of whats happening

Uganda : Organizations ordered to halt treatment scale up.
This restriction lifted, due to activist pressure.

Kenya: New National AIDS Strategy that would increase domestic spending to shift the country from AIDS drugs with harsh side effects to better treatment with fewer side effects.
US says to expect no new funding

Zambia: 3-6 month waiting list for CD4 testing. Shouldnt start HIV treatment without CD4 test first. Also lacking sufficient docs and nurses.
Again, US says to expect no new funding

Democratic Republic of Congo: Due to funding shortfall, new treatment slots reduced from 2,000/month to 2,000/year!

We can defeat HIV

Research shows 92% reduction in HIV transmission if a person has ARVs Evidence that pre-exposure prophylaxis (treatment w/ anti-HIV pills for HIV-negative people) reduces chance of infection Condoms, clean syringes, circumcision, education, etc critical Needed for all: More $$. Obama must keep his promise!
