Heathrow Airport Terminal Maps

20 Nov.2001 UK government approved the building of Heathrows Terminal 5 (T5).It was a terminal building as well as transport interchange involving the boring of tunnels, construction of roads ,car parking, retail facilities, waste management and airfield facilities.

The plans of T5 were subjected to UK's longest ever planning inquiry of 3 years and 10 months ,costing an estimated amount of 80 million pound .Ten major issues were examined in detail ,including environment protection and "land use" policy.

BAA plc.(formerly British Airport Authority),the world's largest commercial operator of airports, operating seven airports in UK & eight airports in other parts of the world, managed the Heathrow airport.T5 would allow Heathrow to maintain its position as the world's busiest international airport, by increasing its capacity to handle an extra 30 million passengers per year.

Odyssey
Original proposal in early 1980s 'coz of 60%increase in passengers every year. Lack of efficient technology.

Squeezed between two active runways on the site of a former sewage works. T5 will increase in air traffic thus elevating the noise and air pollution levels. Aviation -fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Friends of the earth (FOE), a local organization, criticized the government for poor analysis of potential disadvantages.

Designing a terminal that would continue to meet its purpose for at least 25 years.

Changes in climate, lifestyles, technology and regulations were to be anticipated and accommodated. Managing over 50 stakeholder with different needs in the project , as well as creating a share division and cooperative culture for partner companies. Environmental factors

Environmental Factors

"twin rivers" project-diversion of two rivers for over 3.5 km around the Heathrow boundaries.
New habitats of the aquatic life provided & over 8000sq.mt. of pre-grown plant life were installed and extensive revegetation had been encouraged.

Raymond Turner, design director, came out with novel designs, developed considering expected life span of the solution, needs of the user at that time, & strategic objectives of the business.

2D computer aided design drawings and models developed to visualize the possible solutions.

A poster campaign launched to motivate the staff and remind them of the overall vision.

A vision 2020 document released carrying the motive of the project and emphasized the importance of design leadership.

(Created a logistics management at Colnbrook,a railhead on the other side of M25,to which all the supplies were directed & from which all terminal bound shipments were dispatched)

Efficient logistics helped the company in maintaining zero fatality at the site and was the key behind the high levels of performance achieved by the firm.

Biggest novelty in the T5 project was the contract with its main suppliers, aimed at minimizing the conflicts that usually plagued the big construction projects.

BAA had created a fund to meet any future contingencies arising out of conflicts or any other technical problems.

Change in the culture of the project, teams were set up to work together and to concentrate on getting things done with mutual help rather than involving in a blaming game.

Focused on cross functional knowledge,& invested huge sums in deriving its benefits.

Training the team of builders from different departments to raise & lower the roof sections a dozen times, to ensure that there was coordination among them and the final job was done in a smooth way..
