Classification of Communication
Intrapersonal Communication

Interpersonal Communication

Group Communication

Mass Communication
Message is sent to large number of people (newspaper, radio or television)

Verbal Communication
Communicating with words, written or spoken (speaking, listening, writing, reading and thinking)

Non-Verbal Communication
Pictures, signs, gestures and facial expressions
Nonverbal communication can be identified by personal space (Proxemics, body language and kinesics, touch (hap tics), eyes (Oculesics), sense of smell (olfactics) and time (chronemics).

Meta Communication
Speakers choice of words unintentionally communicates something more than what the actual words state.

Purpose/Importance of communication
Society consists of organizations and organizations depend on communication to hold them together. The more complex the society, the more complex its activities and the greater is the need for skillful communication. Communication is central to all human activity and is an integral part of our daily life.

We have to
Adapt our communication to a variety of settings and persons based on the role we are assuming in the interaction. Make daily decision about the appropriates of the messages we are sending. be aware that the manner and methods we choose to communicate our messages have an impact on the effectiveness of those messages. Interpret and evaluate messages we receive everyday and decide what action to take on the basis of the message. Interact with people in groups, at home and outside home and at work.

Importance of communication in Management


Managers have to communicate in all forms, written, oral and nonverbal. The purpose of communication has four main goals:
To Inform, to provide information for use in decision making, but not necessarily advocating any course of action.
Communication to inform (expository communication) is directed by the desire to expose, develop, and explain the subject. Its focus is on the subject of the communication.

To request, to ask for a specific action to be taken by the receiver. To Persuade, to reinforce or change the audiences belief about some thing and possibly, act on the belief.
Essentially, all communication is a deliberate and intentional act of persuasion. A persuasive communicator wants the reader to understand the message and to be influenced, as indented by him.

To build relationships, to create goodwill with the audience.

Shannon-Weaver Model
