other animal groups because of our
capacity for building culture.

OME
ature and Definition of Interaction:
Interaction- is the product of the
mental processes of a number of
people. The ability to interact
symbolically allows the individual
considerable freedom in
interaction, although that freedom

1. Transitory versus Recurrent
Interaction Friends!
Transitory interaction typifies the Friends? 
behavior of such human aggregates
as crowds, publics and audiences,
whose members interact only briefly
– though often with great intensity –
and then go their separate ways.
Recurrent interaction is repetitive
and is exemplified by group prayer
meetings.

2. Informal versus Formal
Interaction
Informal interaction is typical among
family members, friends and
members of other groups whose
activities are not governed by a
body of “official rules”. Formal
interaction proceeds on the basis of
rules that are clearly specified
usually in a written document.

Institutionalization. The
institutionalization of
behavioral rules serves
to maintain the
stability of the group
by providing standard
ways for coping with
needs and achieving
group goals.
The Social Process
Interaction which is recurrent and patterned is called social process.
Social processes then are ways of interacting which are observable
when individuals and groups meet and establish systems of
relationships on the results that arise when changes disturb the
already existing modes of life.

The derived processes
a.) Accommodation – one way of dealing with
conflict.

-a process which involves the conscious

efforts of men to develop such working
arrangements among themselves that will
suspend conflict and make their relations
more tolerable and less wasteful of energy.
b.) Assimilation – a process by whereby
members of a minority group acquire the
socio-cultural patterns of a dominant group
and gradually become absorbed by it.

c.) Amalgamation – the intermarriage of

persons coming from different ethnic
groups.

d.) Acculturation – a process by which

societies of different cultures are modified
through fairly close and long continued
contact, but don’t blend with one another.

H
Two types of Social
Processes, the basic and
derived: No, I’ll
I’ll win! win!
1.The basic processes
a.) Competition – a
process involving two or
more individuals or groups
striving for an objective
that only one can achieve.

b.) Conflict – (Young &

emotionalized and violent Grr...
opposition in which the
major concern is to
overcome the opponent
as a means of securing a We’ll do our best

c.) Cooperation – refers to
more specific aspect of
human intercourse, one
having to do with mutual
aid or an alliance of
persons or groups seeking
some common goal or
reward.
