A design must be in response to individual and social needs , which can be satisfied by technological status of times when design is to be prepared.
Need
Physical Realizability
The good or services described by a design must have utility to the consumer which equals or exceeds the sum of total cost of making available for him.
Economic WorthWhileness
The operation of designing, producing, and distributing the goods must be financially supported.
Financial Feasibility
The Mechanical Design Process; D.G. Ullman
The choice of design concept must be optimal amongst the available alternatives.
Optimality
The Mechanical Design Process; D.G. Ullman
Optimality must be established relative to a design criterion which represents designer compromise among possibly conflicting values judgments which include those of consumers, the producers, and distributers and his own.
Design Criterion
Design is progression from the abstract (idea) to the concrete (Product). Asimow proposed the three phases of design.
Feasibility Study Phase Preliminary Design Phase Detailed Designed Phase
Morphology
Design being iterative problem solving process, it helps in improving the existing product
Design Process
Iterative Nature of Design Process
The designer must also watch out the sub problems (Minor parts)behind the major problem (Major Product).
Sub problems
The Mechanical Design Process; D.G. Ullman
Communication
A design is a description of object and prescription for its production. So the design must be communicated properly in the Language of Engineers i. e., Engineering Drawing, now a days Computer Aided Drafting and Modeling., resulting in very effective communication between designer and sponsor.
Strength Considerations Economic Considerations Convenience of Use Maintenance Market Share Esthetics
A product is said to be successful if it performs its function without failure. For it, the designer must watch out, where the product is overloaded, and how the stress can be reduced by applying different approaches like shape change, material change etc.
Strength Considerations
Even though the cost consideration is a important factor for the producer, but the low priced things are not always preferred by the market, due to inconvenience in use or lack in some features.
Economic Considerations
Ease of maintenance of parts should be there. The parts should complete their working life.
Maintenance
The product should reflect the pride of ownership, function served, high product quality, value and reputation of maker.
Esthetics
Make a Product such that it reflects the Quality of Maker, Pride of owner, and satisfy the needs of individual and society.
