The absolute value of a real number is its value with its sign removed. The number is placed between vertical lines to signify that we are to ignore its sign.

The Concept
Miss Connell 4/21/12

The absolute value can never equal a negative

The absolute of a positive equals the absolute of the negative The absolute of a product of two values equals the product of their absolutes The absolute of quotient

Steps:
Isolate the absolute value Check if the equation has solutions (does the R.S. equal a positive or negative?) Split the absolute into two cases: The positive and The Negative Solve the resulting two equations with respect to the critical value Deduce the solution set from the equation or the zeros of the function.

The solution set of an inequality with an absolute value

1.

May be an interval or the union of intervals May be a single value (one solution) May be empty (no solution)

Inequalities

Steps:
1.

Isolate the absolute Determine the region (interior or exterior) The value opposite the absolute (on the other sign of the inequality symbol) is considered the critical value Split into 2 cases: The Positive and the Negative (same as
an equality)

5.

Draw your number line Apply the values found Represent the solutions on a number line
Use open points if the equation is NOT part of the inequality Use closed points if it IS a part of the inequality (or equal tos) 4/21/12
