LEADERSHIP STYLE

Autocratic Style Characteristics


It is one in which the manager retains as much power and decision-making authority as possible. The manager does not consult employees, nor are they allowed to give any input. Employees are expected to obey orders without receiving any explanations. The motivation environment is produced by creating a structured set of rewards and punishments.

Autocratic Style Characteristics


--Rely on threats and punishment to influence employees --Do not trust employees --Do not allow for employee input

Autocratic Style Can be used when.


--New, untrained employees who do not know which tasks to perform or which procedures to follow --Effective supervision can be provided only through detailed orders and instructions --Employees do not respond to any other leadership style --There are high-volume production needs on a daily basis

Autocratic Style Can be used when.


--There is limited time in which to make a decision --A managers power is challenged by an employee --The area was poorly managed --Work needs to be coordinated with another department or organization

Autocratic style should not be used


--Employees become tense, fearful, or resentful --Employees expect to have their opinions heard --Employees begin depending on their manager to make all their decisions --There is low employee morale, high turnover and absenteeism and work stoppage

Laissez faire Characteristics The style is largely a "hands off" view that tends to minimize the amount of direction and face time required. Let it be the leadership responsibilities are shared by all Can be very useful in businesses where creative ideas are important

Laissez-faire Characteristics
Can be highly motivational, as people have control over their work, goals Works well if followers are highly trained and highly motivated towards goals (eg. Computer programmers, engineers project based work

Relies on good team work Relies on good interpersonal relations between leaders and followers

Laissez Faire Can be used when


Employees are highly skilled, experienced, and educated. --Employees have pride in their work and the drive to do it successfully on their own. --Outside experts, such as staff specialists or consultants are being used --Employees are trustworthy and experienced.

Laissez faire Is NOT used when


It makes employees feel insecure at the unavailability of a manager. --The manager cannot provide regular feedback to let employees know how well they are doing. --Managers are unable to thank employees for their good work. --The manager doesnt understand his or her responsibilities and is hoping the employees can cover for him or her.

Democratic Style
is a facilitator who encourages discussion and the free-flow of ideas. The team expresses their ideas on the best course of action, the leader studies the options and then chooses based on the input Everyone discusses and gives idea BUT the leader makes the decision

Autocratic Style
the person in charge has total authority and control over decision making. By virtue of their position and job responsibilities, they not only control the efforts of the team, but monitor them for completion often under close scrutiny

This style requires the leader to be a coach who has the final say, but gathers information from staff members before making a decision. Democratic leadership can produce high quality and high quantity work for long periods of time. Many employees like the trust they receive and respond with cooperation, team spirit, and high morale. --Develops plans to help employees evaluate their own performance --Allows employees to establish goals --Encourages employees to grow on the job and be promoted --Recognizes and encourages achievement.

Democratic style Is Used When.


The leader wants to keep employees informed about matters that affect them. --The leader wants employees to share in decision-making and problem-solving duties. --The leader wants to provide opportunities for employees to develop a high sense of personal growth and job satisfaction. --There is a large or complex problem that requires lots of input to solve. --Changes must be made or problems solved that affect employees or groups of employees. --You want to encourage team building and participation.

Democratic Style IS not used when


There is not enough time to get everyones input. --Its easier and more cost-effective for the manager to make the decision. --The business cant afford mistakes. --The manager feels threatened by this type of leadership. --Employee safety is a critical concern.

Bureaucratic Style Characteristics.


where the manager manages by the book Everything must be done according to procedure or policy. If it isnt covered by the book, the manager refers to the next level above him or her. This manager is really more of a police officer than a leader. He or she enforces the rules.

Bureaucratic Style Is used when


Employees are performing routine tasks over and over. --Employees need to understand certain standards or procedures. --Employees are working with dangerous or delicate equipment that requires a definite set of procedures to operate. --Safety or security training is being conducted. --Employees are performing tasks that require handling cash

Bureaucratic style is not used when


Work habits form that are hard to break, especially if they are no longer useful. --Employees lose their interest in their jobs and in their fellow workers. --Employees do only what is expected of them and no more.

Charismatic Leadership Characteristics


Leaders are viewed as having supernatural powers and abilities, the leader is viewed as a hero by followers Leaders are followed because of personal trust and the charisma the leader exhibits Followers are promoted based on personal charisma they exhibit There are no formal offices of authority, power is gained through social skills

Charismatic Leaders Advantages


Followers are most energetic, efficient and motivated Whoever the charismatic leaders speak to, the person will feel he/she is the most important person to the leader

Charismatic Leaders Disadvantages


If the leader leaves the group (death or retirement), the group will dissolve.] Loyalty is to the leader not the objective or the group. If the leader is evil, dangerous situation to the group. .

Servant Leadership Characteristics


Servant leadership is one of the most popular leadership models around today. The servant leader serves the people he/she leads which implies that employees are an end in themselves rather than a means to an organizational purpose or bottom line.

devote themselves to serving the needs of organization members. focus on meeting the needs of those they lead. develop employees to bring out the best in them. coach others and encourage their self expression. facilitate personal growth in all who work with them. listen and build a sense of community.

Servant Leadership Advantages

Servant leaders are felt to be effective because the needs of followers are so looked after that they reach their full potential, hence perform at their best.

A strength of this way of looking at leadership is that it forces us away from self-serving, domineering leadership and makes those in charge think harder about how to respect, value and motivate people reporting to them

Servant Leadership Disadvantages


Leaders may be controlled by employees/followers Goals are not met for customers.
