Paints & Finishes Consumer Protection Safety Commission Standards

All Metal components not inherently corrosion resistant, should be galvanized, or otherwise treated to prevent rust for at least a few years. The manufacturer should ensure that the users cannot ingest, inhale, or absorb potentially hazardous amounts of preservative chemicals or other treatments applied to the equipment as a result of contact with playground equipment. All paints and other similar finishes must meet the current CPSC [Consumer Protection Safety Commission] regulations for lead in paint (0.06% [600ppm] maximum lead by dry weight). Painted surfaces should be painted in such a manner as to prevent corrosion and deterioration. Powder Coating or other such baked on technology is recommended Paint and other finishes should be maintained to prevent rusting of exposed metals and to eliminate children playing with peeling paint and paint flakes. This can prove extremely dangerous as such peel offs can be ingested easily leading to poisoning.

Inhaling fiberglass particles can cause irritation or potential life-threatening conditions. Respiratory Distress Inhaling the material could cause irritation of the mouth, nasal passage and throat. The Illinois Department of healths fact sheet reports the fiberglass strands or dust can be easily inhaled. The inhaled particles, according to the Net Wellness Consumer Health Information network, cause "bronchitis-like symptoms" or discolored phlegm. Fibre Glass is also known to elevate Asthma and cause cancer. Mattel, the world's largest toy maker had been plagued with recalls of toys containing lead. Plastic products were reported to contain lead which is used commonly in recycled plastic.

In the manufacturing process IN RECYCLED PLASTICS, lead is added to plastic as an inexpensive stabilizer. Recycled plastic contain dangerous levels of lead. Lead pigments are also added to recycled plastic as a colorant.

Lead is a poisonous metal. It has no taste and you cannot detect it visually. For years it was found commonly in gasoline and in ordinary house paint. Other common sources include: plumbing pipes, batteries, etc from countries where lead use is not regulated.

Swallowing or inhaling lead can be hazardous to your health. Children (including unborn children) are most susceptible and it can cause damage to the brain and nervous system. It can cause such problems as delayed development and growth, behavior and attention disorders, kidney damage and hearing problems.
