Semantics is a study of the meaning of lexical items and other parts of language. According to Leech (1974), there are seven types of meaning in Semantics. WHAT ARE THEY..?

This study focuses on only two of the types of meaning: CONCEPTUAL MEANING & CONNOTATIVE MEANING

CONCEPTUAL MEANING
Conceptual meaning is the literal meaning of the word indicating the idea or concept to which it refers. This refers to the definition given in the dictionary. It is also called "denotative or lexical meaning.

ASSOCIATIVE MEANING The words meaning that is still related to other words. In other words, it is the meaning of words that has connection to the relationship of word with condition beyond the language.

CONNOTATIVE MEANING Connotative meaning refers to what is communicated by virtue of what language refers to (Leech 1974:14). In other words, it is the meaning above the conceptual meaning and it may vary according to culture, background or society.

Example: In Indonesian, the word violet may have the connotation widowhood, apart from its referential meaning. cicak and buaya

SOCIAL MEANING Social (stylistic) meaning refers to what is communicated of the social circumtances of language use. This meaning relates to the social circumstance of the speakers culture. Example: Residence is formal and home is casual. Lecturer teaches at collage, teacher teaches at school

AFFECTIVE MEANING Affective meaning refers to what is communicated of feelings and attitudes of the speaker /writer. It reflects the personal feelings of the speaker or writer including his attitude to the listener or his attitude to something that is uttered.

REFLECTED MEANING Reflected meaning refers to what is communicated through association with another sense of the same expression.

COLLOCATIVE MEANING Collocative meaning is what is communicated through association with word tends to occur in the environment of another word (Leech 1974:20).

Example: Both pretty and handsome mean goodlooking but they differ in collocative meaning. Pretty often co-occurs with girl, woman, flower, skirt, etc. Handsome often collocates with boy, man, car, overcoat, etc.

CONCLUSION Language as a mean of communication to others may refer to things beyond it. It is due to it is associated with many aspects. It differs from the original concept. There are terms of conceptual and associative meaning Associative meaning involves wider participant than conceptual meaning.
