WHAT IS MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY?

Membrane technology has become a dignified separation technology .
The main force of membrane technology is the fact that it works without the addition of chemicals, with a relatively low energy use and easy and well-arranged process conductions. Membranes are used more and more often for the creation of process water from groundwater, surface water or wastewater. . The membrane separation process is based on the presence of semi permeable membranes.

PRINCIPLE OF MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY

the membrane acts as a very specific filter that will let water flow through, while it catches suspended solids and other substances.

There are two factors that determine the affectivity of a membrane filtration process. 1. selectivity 2. productivity

BENIFITS OF MEMBRANE SEPRATION TECHNOLOGY

1. It is a process that can take place while temperatures are low. 2. It is a process with low energy cost.

3. The process can easily be expanded

1. REVERSE OSMOSIS 2. ULTRA FILTRATION 3. MICRO FILTRATION 4. PERVAPORATION

REVERSE OSMOSIS
Reverse osmosis is a membrane technical filteration method that removes many type of Large molecules and ions from solution by applying pressure. Osmosis is a natural process .when to liquids off different concentration are seperated by a semipermiable membrane the fluid has a tendency to move from low to high solute concentration.
Reverse osmosis is a technique that is mainly applied during drinking water preparation.

APPLICATION
1. Water softening. 2. Drinking water production. 3. Process water production. 4. Concentration of molecular solvent for food ( fruit juice, sugar) 5. Dairy industries(concentration of milk)

ULTRA FILTRATION
Ultra filtration is use for the complete removal of viruses. The pores of ultra filtration membrane can remove particles of 0.010.1micometer from fluid. Ultra filtration can also be applied for pretreatment of water for nano filtration or reverse osmosis.

APPLICAION
1.In dairy industy(milk,cheese). 2. In food industry(proteins)

3. Recovery and re-use of enzymes.

4. Potable water and effluent treatment.

MICRO FILTRATION
Micro filtration remove all bacteria. Micro filtration membrane are natural or synthetic polymer such as cellulose nitrate or acetate.

APPLICATION
1. Cold sterilization of beverage. 2. Clearing of fruit juice, wines and beer. 3. Seperation of bacteria from water. 4. Seperation of oil/water emulsion.

PERVAPORATION
1.Pervaporation, in its simplest form, is an energy efficient combination of membrane permeation and evaporation. 2. Pervaporation is also used for the dehydration of organic solvents and the removal of organics from aqueous streams. Characteristics of the pervaporation process include Low energy consumption No entrainer required, no contamination Permeate must be volatile at operating conditions Functions independent of vapor/liquid equilibrium

APPLICATION
1. Solvent Dehydration: dehydrating the ethanol/water and isopropanol/water azeotropes 2. Continuous ethanol removal from yeast fermentor. 3. Removing organic solvents from industrial waste waters.

4.Combination of distillation and pervaporation/vapour permeation.

5.Concentration of hydrophobic flavour compounds in aqueous solutions (using hydrophobic membranes)
