Benjamin Solomon Carson M.D.

September 18, 1951- Present

"Success is determined not by whether or not you face obstacles, but by your reaction to them. And if you look at these obstacles as a containing fence, they become your excuse for failure. If you look at them as a hurdle, each one strengthens you for the next."
-Ben Carson

From dummy to the Director of Johns Hopkins Hospital

Accomplishments
1887 German Binder Twins Carson was the primary neurosurgeon and leader amongst the 70 member team that successfully separated 7 month old German Twins, Benjamin and Patrick Binder. They shared the major cerebral blood drainage system. The 22 hour surgery was believed to have been the first time that hypothermia was coupled with circulatory bypass and deliberate cardiac arrest to spare brain tissue. The boys returned to Germany 7 months later.

First successful separation of craniopagus twins

Although he has been involved in numerous news worthy operations, he feels that every case is noteworthy.
In 1997, Dr. Carson led a team of doctors in South Africa in the first completely successful separation of vertical craniopagus twins from Zambia. The procedure lasted 28 hours, but the 11-month-old boys showed no signs of impairment.
