EMOTION
What is emotion ? Oxford English dictionary defines emotion as any agitation or disturbance of mind, feeling, passion, any vehement or excited mental state. Emotions , feelings and perception are closely linked with each other.

Emotions- strong feelings love, joy, hate, fear jealousy. Feelings- Aware of experience, sensation, impression-a feeling of hunger, well being, discontent. Perception- ability to see, hear, or understand , quality of understanding and way of seeing things.

The main categories


Anger- fury, outrage, resentment, wrath, hostility Sadness- grief, sorrow, cheerfulness, gloom, melancholy Fear-apprehension, nervousness, fright, terror, phobia, panic Enjoyment-happiness, joy, bliss, delight, ecstasy Love-acceptance, affinity, devotion, adoration, infatuation Surprise-shock, astonishment, amazement, wonder Disgust-scorn, contempt, aversion, distaste, revulsion Shame-guilt,. Embarrassment, remorse, regret,

With anger blood flows to the hands, making it


easier to grasp a weapon or strike, at a foe, heart rate increases, and a rush of hormone such as adrenaline generates a pulse of energy strong enough for vigorous action. With Fear blood flows to the large skeletal muscles such as in the legs, making it easier top flee, and making the face blanch as blood is shunted away from it. Happiness is increased activity in the brain that fosters an increase in available energy.

Think how a low scoring classmate of yours , managed to move higher than you on the ladder of business and life.

Person high on IQ but low on EQ is critical and is uncomfortable with others. Person high on emotional intelligence are poised outgoing ,committed to other people, sympathetic and caring.

A high IQ may assure you a top position , but it may not make you a top person.

What is emotional intelligence?


Emotional intelligence is a type of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor ones own and others emotions to discriminate among them and to use the information to guide ones thinking and actions. (Mayors Sarovey)

EQ refers to emotional awareness and emotional management skills which provide the ability to balance emotion and reason so as to maximize long-term happiness . In simple terms this is defined as knowing what feels good, what feels bad, and how to get from bad to good.

Components of Emotional Intelligence


Interpersonal Intelligence is the ability to understand other people : what motivates them, how they work and how to work cooperatively with them. Intrapersonal Intelligence it is a capacity to form an accurate model of oneself and to be able to use that model to operate effectively in life.

Components of Intrapersonal categories


Knowing ones emotions- ability to recognize feelings when they happen and not put off feelings if they are inconvenient
Emotional awareness to recognize how our emotions affect our performance and the ability to use our values to guide decision making Know which emotions they are feeling and why.? Realize the link between their feelings ,what they think, do and say. Have a guiding awareness of their values and goals.

Accurate self assessment


Aware of their strength and weakness. Reflective , learning from experiences Open to candid feedback, new perspective , continuous learning and self development. Able to show a sense of humour and perspective about themselves.

Self confidence- The courage that comes from certainty about our capabilities , values and goals.
Present themselves with self assurance. Can voice views that are unpopular. Able to make sound decisions despite uncertainties and pressures.

Motivating oneselfEmotions motivate us but they can also dis -empower us if they are too strong and we allow them to overwhelm us .
Achievement drivestriving to improve or meet a standard of excellence .
Are result oriented, with a high drive to meet objectives and standards. Pursue information to reduce uncertainty and find ways to do better. Learn how to improve their performance.

CommitmentEmbracing the organizations or groups vision and goals.


Readily make sacrifices to meet a larger organizational goals. Find a sense of purpose in the larger mission. Use the groups core values in making decisions clarifying choices Actively seek out opportunities to fulfill the groups mission.

Initiative and Optimism- Twin competencies that mobilize people to seize opportunities and allow them to take setbacks and obstacles in stride. Initiative
Are ready to seize opportunities. Pursue goals beyond requirement and what is expected. Cut through red tapes and blend the rules when necessary to get a job done. Mobilize others through unusual, enterprising efforts.

Optimism
Persist in seeking goals despite obstacles and setbacks. Operate from hope of success rather than fear of failure. View setbacks as due to management circumstances rather than a personal flaw.

Managing emotionsAbility to handle uncomfortable emotions once we have accepted we are feeling them . Developing an inner mothering mode and learning to soothe ourselves when things seem difficult. A good book , a nice meal etc to make you feel you care and value yourself. Self control
Manage disruptive emotions and impulses effectively. Stay composed , positive even in difficult moments. Think clearly and stay focused under pressure.

Trust worthiness -displaying honesty and integrity.


Act ethically. Build trust through reliability. Admit your own mistakes. Take tough principled stand even if they are unpopular.

Conscientiousness- dependability and responsibility in fulfilling obligations.


Meet commitment s and promises. Hold themselves accountable for meeting their objective. Are organized and careful in their work.

Adaptability- flexibility in handling change and challenges.


Smoothly handle multiple demands , shifting priorities and rapid change. Adapt responses and tactics to fit fluid circumstances. Are flexible in how they see events.

Innovation- being open to novel ideas , approaches and new information.


Seek out fresh ideas from a wide variety of sources. Entertain original solutions to problems Generate new ideas. Take fresh perspectives and risks in their thinking.

Empathy- recognizing emotions in others. Feel with someone rather than just feel about them.
Understanding others- their feelings and perspectives and taking interest in their concerns.
