Hub Receiver Unit (HRU)

The Hub Receiver Unit (HRU) processes Inbound signals and transmits
them over the LAN to the HSP, DPS or VPP
The HRU is a VME-bus chassis composed of:
A Controller card

Up to 18 inbound Receiver Cards

A Power splitter panel

Up to 6 receiver cages per HSP:

The receivers support GMSK Modulation

2 receivers per board

Maximal receiver rate is 840ksps

The HRU is connected to the following components:
Sync Device, HSP, VPP, LNB down converter splitter panel

24
Synchronization Device
Inbound transmission is based on slotted ALOHA, mandating VSATs &
HUB synchronization to a common time base
The Synchronization Device sends synchronization signals to the
VSATs & the HRU
The Sync device is connected to the following components:

Data LAN

HSP HSP
Card Card
IPE

SYNC SYNC

25
IP Encapsulator (IPE)

The IP Encapsulator (IPE) receives IP packets and converts them into

MPEG2 transport stream
The IPE uses two types of encapsulation:
MPE (Multi Protocol Encapsulation) for user data and system control
Data piping for the voice packets

MPEG2 includes MPE header, PID Sync
PID
PID helps reconstruct IP data packets PID
 MPE header (only for Data, Sync, and NMS information)
 PID identifies the packet contents throughout the system.

27
Modulator DVB-S / 8PSK-Turbo
to the RFT

The Modulator receives the MPEG2 Modulator

transform stream from the IPE and
converts it into a DVB-S modulated stream
It is also responsible for the Outbound MPEG2
Transport
Forward Error Correction (FEC) Stream
from IPE

Newtec:
 QPSK modulation
 Agile 70MHz IF output
 FEC Code Rates: 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8
 Symbol Rate: 256 Ksps to 30 Msps
 FEC Modes: Viterbi & RS
Sencore:

Media Gateway

The Media Gateway is the main interface of the SkyEdge

network with the terrestrial telephony network.
Located at the hub and equipped with an E1 interface, the
Media Gateway supports up to 30 simultaneous calls.
As many as 256 Media Gateway units can be supported by
the SkyEdge hub.
