What is the World Wide

Web?
• World Wide Web ("WWW" or simply
the "Web") is a system of interlinked,
hypertext documents that runs over
the Internet.
How do we access the World
Wide Web?
• With a Web browser, a user views
Web pages that may contain text,
images, and other multimedia and
navigates between them using
hyperlinks.
Trivia! About the word
“surfing”
• The phrase "surfing the Internet" was
first popularized in print by Jean
Armour Polly, a librarian, in an article
called Surfing the INTERNET,
published in the University of
Minnesota Wilson Library Bulletin in
June, 1992.

When did it all began?
• The origins of the World Wide Web
can be traced back to 1980. Since
then it has evolved far beyond what it’s
creators imagined.

synonym for the Internet itself.
• The Web is a service that operates
over the Internet, as e-mail does.
• The history of the Internet dates back
significantly further than that of the
World Wide Web.

What is HyperText
• Hypertext is text which is not constrained to
be linear.Hypertext is text which contains
links to other texts. The term was coined by
Ted Nelson around 1965.
• HyperMedia is a term used for hypertext
which is not constrained to be text: it can
include graphics, video and sound , for
example. Apparently Ted Nelson was the
first to use this term too.
• Hypertext and HyperMedia are concepts,
not products.

1990 was a momentous year in world
events.
In February, Nelson Mandela was freed
after 27 years in prison.
In April, the space shuttle Discovery
carried the Hubble Space Telescope into
orbit.
And in October, Germany was reunified.

Then at the end of 1990, a revolution took

place that changed the way we live
today.
When and where did it all
began?
CERN, the European Organization for
Nuclear Research, is where it all began in
March 1989.
A physicist, Tim Berners-Lee, wrote a
proposal for information management
showing how information could be
transferred easily over the Internet by using
hypertext, the now familiar point-and-click
system of navigating through information.

It was the first web
server,

editor.
What is Lee’s purpose in
conceiving his idea?
The idea was to connect hypertext
with the Internet and personal
computers, thereby having a single
information network to help CERN
physicists share all the computer-
stored information at the laboratory.
Hypertext would enable users to
browse easily between texts on web
pages using links; The first examples
were developed on NeXT computers.
Lee’s concept implemented
of NeXT computers in CERN
How did the name came to
be what it is?
• Berners-Lee created a browser-editor
with the goal of developing a tool to
make the Web a creative space to
share and edit information and build a
common hypertext. What should they
call this new browser: The Mine of
Information? The Information Mesh?
When they settled on a name in May
1990, it was the WorldWideWeb.
