India is the largest producer of milk producing more


than 100 million tons of milk per annum.
India has a population of more than 1 billion.
Her per capita milk consumption is around 250 g per
day.

Milk production is growing at 3% p.a.


Per capita milk availability growing at only 1.5% p.a.
Ghee (clarified butter) consumption growing at 9%
Table Butter & cheese consumption growing at 10%
Demand for dairy products will soon exceed supply

Raising

productivity of dairy farms and mitigation of


their production risks requires the availability of
improved breeding services, targeted preventive animal
health care (specifically addressing foot-and-mouth
disease and hemorrhagic septicemia) and better feeding
strategies.

Furthermore,

building the capacity of producers to act


on their own behalf is therefore essential for improving
poor producers' welfare.

Milk output is expected to touch 121.5 million tonnes


in the current year, translating into a growth of nearly
4% vis-a-vis the previous year, according to Us
Department Of Agriculture (USDA) report

The milk production will go up due to the improved


management practices adopted Indian dairies and
efforts by the private and public sector to improve
cattle genetics, besides good fodder availability, the
USDA report said
