Statement. Able to write the purpose or Mission statement of a unit. Define and write the objectives of a unit. Define Philosophy as it pertains to a unit. Write a Philosophy Statement for a unit. Use a set of standards to evaluate the vision and mission statement of a unit.

VISION
Vision statements are future oriented. It defines the

organizations desired future outcome vision for the future. The vision statement is created with the customers need in mind. To determine these needs one must ask and listen to the customer. Example of a Vision statement of a regional hospital - ( a vision is defined as an image of the future we seek to create). Statement: To be the regions provider of high quality health care services.

EXAMPLE OF A VISION
Vision statement of B.H. hospital. To become the centre of excellence in patient care .

MISSION
A mission is defined as purpose for being defined

simply as who we are and what we do. Mission identifies the organizations customers and the types of services offered such as education, supportive nursing care, rehabilitation, acute care, home care etc. It enacts the vision statement.

UNITS MISSION
All members of the unit should participate in its

development.
It should be written down and easily available to all its

members.

EXAMPLE OF MISSION STATEMENT

L.M. hospital is a care facility.
Provide comprehensive, holistic care to all residents -

who seek treatment. Purpose of L.M. Hospital is to; Combine high quality, holistic health care. Provision of learning opportunities for students in medicine, nursing and allied health sciences. Research is encouraged.

THE OBEJCTIVES OF A UNIT

OBJECTIVES
- Motivate people to a specific end. - Are explicit, measurable, observable or retrievable and

obtainable measures that detail how and when goals are to be accomplished.

OBEJECTIVES
Objectives can either focus on;
- The desired process or desired end.

Process objectives;
- Written in terms of method to be used. Result focused objectives;

- Specify the desired outcome.

OBJECTIVES
PROCESS OBJECTIVE 100% of staff nurses will orient new patients to the call lights systems. Time frame within 30 minutes of their admission. Methods-by demonstrating how to use call lights. Asking patient to repeat the demonstration. Result focused objective. - All postoperative patients. - Will perceive a decrease in their pain levels. - Following the admission of pain medication.

OBJECTIVES
To be measurable.
Should have certain criteria. - Specific time frame in which the objectives are to be

completed. - Objectives must be stated in behavioral terms, be obejctively evaluated and identify positive rather than negative outcomes.

PHILOSOPHY
Organizational philosophy.
Flows from the purpose or mission statement. Delineates the set of values and beliefs that guide all

actions of the organization.

PHILOSOPHY AS IT PERTIANS TO A UNIT

Organizational philosophy provides basis for;
- Developing nursing philosophies at the unit level and

nursing services.
Unit philosophies;

- Specifies how nursing care on the unit will correspond with nursing service and organizational goals.

PHILOSOPHY AS IT PERTAINS TO A UNIT

Unit level managers
Are active in determining, implementing, and

evaluating the unit philosophy.

Statement of philosophy helpful only if it truly

directs work of the organization towards a specific purpose.

A working philosophy.
- Evident in a departments decisions. - Priorities.

- Accomplishments.
A philosophy - That is not or cannot be implemented is useless.

PLANNING
Manager must understand the planning hierarchy.
Be able to articulate ideas in writing Leaders

purpose and goals so that the philosophy not only reflects current practice, but incorporates a view for the future.

PURPOSE OF PLANNING
Everyone has the same idea or vision of where the

organization is headed.
A good plan can help to ensure that needed resources

are available to carry out the initiatives that have been identified as important to the unit.

IN PLANNING PROCESS
Organization and the work unit to.
Develop goals and quality measures that reflects the

mission.
Goals specific aim or target the unit wishes to attain

within time span of a year.

PLANNING PATIENT CARE

Involves :
Clarifying organizations philosophical values.
Identifying why the organization exists. Articulating a vision statement. Conducting an environment assessment or SWOT

analysis.

QUALITY MEASURES
Customer/ patient satisfaction example decrease in
