gossip lately. We want to talk
honestly today and teach students
the right way to communicate.
Cell phones are useful tools, but only
when used appropriately and with
good judgment.

Inappropriate cell phone usage is a major
teenage problem from ages 10-18.
The slang term "sexting or "sex texting
refers to a nationwide phenomenon of
children sending nude or semi-nude
photos of their private parts.

According to researcers at Rocester %ecnology of
Institute almost one-tird of teens in grades 10-12 ave sent
or received sexual content online and tey use cell pones.
For cildren in grades 4-6, tat number is still one in ten.
Attorneys like Dallas lawyer Clint David say te practice is

says David. At least one teenager as landed in jail because
of is alleged actions involving 'sexting.
A 16-year old Pennsylvania boy was arrested and carged

a 15-year old girl into sending im explicit pictures.

genitalia on er cell pone told er moter, wo told local
autorities. %ey responded by carging te alleged sender
wit a tird degree felony. %e girl said se first tougt te

apparently did not know te man, and its unclear wy e
sent it to er. If convicted, e could serve up to five years.

In anoter incident of sexting, a Cippewa Falls, Wis., yout
was arrested for sowing off to friends nude potos of is ex-
girlfriend. %e potos were on is cellpone.

Having nude photos of children and their
private parts is a felony crime.
In Illinois, felony crimes are punishable
by a one year prison sentence or more,
depending upon the circumstances and
the type/class of offense.
Felony convictions may prevent adults
from getting jobs that require criminal
background checks, such as police,
teaching, fire fighting, nursing, etc.

indecent manner or engaging in sexual activity is regarded as cild
pornograpy and people wo receive or pass on tese types of images
are risking criminal carges, weter tey are a minor or an adult. [.]
Parents need to become more aware of wat teir cildren are doing
wit teir mobile pones and personal computers because wat migt
seem like a armless image of temselves to be used privately can fall
into te ands of sexual predators and be posted across te internet.

Parents sould familiarize temselves wit te
new tecnologies tat are around, so tey
understand te potential for exploitation, as well
as wat teir kids are doing.
Parents need to overcome any embarrassment
tey may feel about talking to teir cildren about
sex, so tey can be effective wen educating teir
kids about te dangers associated wit cild
pornograpy.
If parents are going to give teir cild a mobile
pone, ensure tey are mature enoug to use it
appropriately.
