CCP303.47 1
Objectives :

On Completion of this period, you would be

able to calculate:
MODE - Continuous Series

CCP303.47 2
Recap :

Calculation of Mode (Z)

 Individual Series
 Discrete Series

CCP303.47 3
When Class Intervals are
Unequal :
Steps:
 First convert classes equally
 Identify the highest frequency
 Corresponding class for the highest frequency
is Modal Class
 If necessary, prepare Grouping & Analysis
tables
 Apply the formula ∆1
Mode = L + ------------ X I
∆1 + ∆2
CCP303.47 4
Example 1 :
Calculate Mode for data below:

Class Frequency Class Frequency

0–3 9 15 – 18 15
3–6 3 18 – 20 25
6– 8 5 20 – 24 13
8 – 10 5 24 – 28 25
10 – 12 14 28 – 30 8
12 – 15 21 30 – 36 6

CCP303.47 5
Solution to Ex.1 :

In the problem, class intervals are unequal.

Adjust the frequencies and make class
intervals equal. Afterwards, compute Mode

CCP303.47 6
Solution contd.

Calculation of Mode

Class Frequency

0–6 12
6 – 12 24
12 – 18 36
18 – 24 38
24 – 30 33
30 – 36 6

CCP303.47 7
Solution contd.

 By Inspection, Mode lies in the class 18 -24

∆1
 Mode (Z) = L + ------------ X i
∆1 + ∆2
L = 18, ∆1 = 38 – 36 = 2, ∆2 = 38 – 33 =5, i = 6
2
Mode (Z) = 18 + --------- X 6
(2+5)
= 18 + 1.71
= 19.71

CCP303.47 8
Example 2 :
Calculation of Mode from the following data by
Grouping method:
Value Frequency

0–4 328
5–9 350
10 – 19 720
20 – 29 664
30 – 39 598
40 – 49 524
50 – 59 378
60 – 69 244
CCP303.47 9
Solution to Ex.2

 To make class intervals equal, combine the

first and second classes
 Also prepare a Grouping table and Analysis
table to ascertain modal class

CCP303.47 10
Solution contd.
Grouping Table

Value I II III IV V VI
0 - 9 678
10 – 19 720 1398
20 – 29 664 1384 2062

30 – 39 598 1262 1982

40 - 49 524 1122 1786

50 – 59 378 902 1500

60 – 69 244 622 1146

CCP303.47 12
Solution contd.

Inferences from Analysis Table :

 Mode lies in the class 10 – 19

 But, real limits of this class are 9.5 – 19.5

CCP303.47 13
Solution contd. ∆1
Mode = L + ------------ X i
∆1 + ∆2
L=9.5,
∆1 = (720-678)=42
∆2 = (720-694)=56
I =10
42
Mode = 9.5 + ------------ X 10
42 + 56
= 9.5 + 4.24 = 13.78

CCP303.47 14
Summary :

 Calculation of Mode for unequal classes can

be done by changing the classes equally
