of Resistance .

EC105.18 3
THERMISTORS

Thermistors are resistors whose resistance decreases

• Considerably with temperature .

• They are made of mixtures of metallic oxides usually

Manganese (MnO2) and Nickel (NiO) , which have a semi-
conducting property .

• At low temperatures ,semi-conductors have relatively few free

electrons so that their resistance is high .

EC105.18 4
• When temperature rises ,more electrons gain sufficient
energy to reach the conduction band, and so the resistance
decreases.

• Between two wire leads ,(2.5mm apart ),a properly chosen

mixture of these oxides is held tight as Small beads and the
assembly is sintered at a high temperature. The wires are
then cut to separate the adjacent units .they are then
covered ,either in a small glass tube or simply coated with
glass.

EC105.18
Thermistor characteristics
Characteristics of Thermistor

• The characteristic of Current Vs Voltage of a thermistor is

Nonlinear.

• As the current increases the I²R loss in the thermistor

increases its temperature and hence the resistance falls.

• The glass coated bead type is available in resistances from

1K to 100 k ( 25°C ± 10% values ).

EC105.18 7
They are used only for measurement applications
and so their ratings are low .(50 to 100mW )This
increase in resistance depends directly on

• ITS INITIAL RESISTANCE.

• THE RISE IN TEMPERATURE.

• THE NATURE OF THE MATERIAL.

EC105.18 8
Applications of Thermistors

Thermistors are used for measuring

• Temperature.

• Thermal conductivity.

• Wind velocity.

• Also used in limiting and regulating circuits.

• As time relays.
• For in.
